495422 2006-10-31 10:38:00 Without useing Google or nay other search engine who can really say what halloween is really about or its origins.

Trevor :)

No, I didn't look...I remembered.

And it's not a totally pagan ritual. It's partly descended from the Christian calendar.
The night before All Souls Day is Halloween = "hallowed evening."
But the idea that the dead walk then - and the witches come out - has been added by "others."

So how did I do?

(Some of that stuff I learned in Sunday School comes in handy for the strangest reasons...)

If that's true (for any given value of "true"), then it makes a change from the christians hi-jacking older celebrations and case modding 'em to suit the new order. :groan: Err, or something.

495425 2006-10-31 21:58:00 We lived in America for some years so got involved in the Trick or Treating. Most youngsters of tender age were accompanied by their parents - the kids were often in fancy dress - so teenagers more or less ignored it. Unfortunately some people were supplying drug laden sweets and others home made confectionery containing dubious ingredients. The American Government eventually warned parents only to accept commercial products (safer).
My somewhat questionable contribution to the nights festivities was to have my stereo speakers hidden in the front garden - warn the kids to watch out for the dogs as they left - then suddenly play a recording of dogs barking, wolves howling etc. The kids once their feet landed back on the ground seemed to love it. I have a weird sense of humour.

495426 2006-10-31 22:10:00 The Druids and other Babylonian religions preceded the first century so-called christians, and they were not contaminated by the church but the other way around. In an attempt to grease the skids of get those who resisted the universalist programs of decrees of the priesthood (long dissolved in 32 AD at the destruction of the temple in Jerusalem), they inculcated the pagan stuff into the catechism in about 502 at Nicea.

Keeping the money flowing, the women preggo in the kitchen cranking out new "christians" to keep the pews full was just a money grab and to keep the head count inflated. Fear of hellfire and eternal damnation was alluded to via the fear and hate generated by introducing demonic practices which gave a preview of what was to await those who didn't fall under the spell of wonderful people like the heretic burners of the crusades and Mr. Torquemada. They (christendom) got this from pagandom, not vice-versa. It uses this fear and mystery to keep adherents to this day.

There's just nothing so Christlike to see a human form writhing and quivering in agony whilst laced through the spokes of a wheel...all bones artfully broken to get them to accept "salvation" at the hands of your local friendly inquisitor/priest.

Celebrations like Halloween and All-Saint's day are just a few of the holy days of obligation of the "enlightened" church that rules with iron rods and molten lead. Now they make it "cute" with little children begging for candy and treats.
