2006-11-01 04:15:00 | If you have no idea what is needed do you really think it's a good idea to even be opening the case? Well, to install ram I don't need anything. A lot of my problem is, I don't have a clue what all the things are called. To me all screws and screwdrivers fall under two categories. 'Yes, look! I can unscrew this screw with this screwdriver!', and 'Hmm, strange, its not turning. Perhaps I should try another screwdriver'. If you get what I mean. I mean this here looks like brilliantly helpful information: No 1 and No 2 Posidrive screwdrivers are essential. Don't use "Philips" screwdrivers except on Philips screws. A set of Torx bits (and security Torx bits) will be handy sometimes and the justification for the multibit driver's occasional use. A pair of forceps is useful. Tweezers are less useful. Magnetise your screwdrivers. They will be better for fishing for dropped screws, and starting screws than the pearl catch tool. Longnose pliers, and sidecutters. A "4 inch Crescent" (100 mm adjustable wrench) is always handy.I just don't understand a word of it. How do I magnetise my screwdrivers? Where do I get all this stuff from? Placemakers or something?

That works....thats why multibit screwdrivers are good, oh, I'll just put this funny shape on that looks like the funny shape screw...:D Dick Smiths have all you need. A posidrive is almost like a Philips, which is used to undo the + shaped screws, except a Philips has a pointy end and a posidrive has more of a blunt looking end. Posidrives undo philips screws better than Philips screwdrivers. Magnetise the screwdriver with a magnet. Or someone elses magnetised screwdriver. |

2006-11-01 09:15:00 | Where do I get all this stuff from? Placemakers or something?Dick Smith Electronics has quite a bit of this stuff. You used to be abe to buy mixed packs of spare small screws suitable for computer innards from them, but I'm not sure if they stock them anymore. You will also find all sorts of goodies at a local $2 shop.

2006-11-01 09:37:00 | Yes your local $2 nick knack shop should have lots of cheap goodies. I can get a decent rubber mallet, 100 cable ties, screwdrivers, wire strippers, basic torches each for $2

2006-11-01 09:45:00 | Our local Dick Smith is pretty useless for tools. They have a "PC tool kit" which is just filled with junky rubbish. They do have the assorted screws back in again though, which are useful. For screwdrivers I got a good set from George Henry, though I don't think they are in Auckland.

2006-11-01 10:18:00 | Well, to install ram I don't need anything. Yes you do, you need an anti-static wrist strap, and you need to ensure it's properly grounded. Do you have an anti-static wrist strap? No? Then you run the risk of frying the RAM you are trying to install. I mean this here looks like brilliantly helpful information: <snip> I just don't understand a word of it. Leave the case shut until you do.
