716021	2008-10-30 09:47:00	(Apologies - long post!) Hi everyone, my flatmate has a Compaq Presario V3000 Laptop. It appears to have come up with the XP BSOD: “We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows normally. Safe Mode Safe Mode with Networking Safe Mode with Command Prompt Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked) Start Windows Normally Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice. Seconds until Windows starts: 30[sec]” Regardless of the option chosen it proceeds to only a blue flash of a screen and the it reboots over and over with the same blue screen. Now I recorded it on my phone and it appears[i/] to read: “STOP C000218(Registry file failure) The registry cannot load the hive file \Systemboot\system32\config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate It is corrupt, absent, or not writable Beginning dump of physical memory Physical memory dump complete Contact your system administrator or technical * for assistance” I [i]think the number is correct- phone camera is not that great! I have somehow managed to get it to do a memory self test which it is running through now. These were the stats on the DOS-style screen before the test was started: Make & Model Compaq Presario V3000 Notebook model HP Pavilion dv2000 (x123xx#ABA) System Board ID 30B5 Processor AMD Turion ™ 62 X2 Speed 1600MHz Total Memory 1024MB Video memory up to 256MB Bios version F.13 Serial no blank UUID no 0’s It was purchased from DSE about 18 months ago, and has an OEM-installed operating system- no discs, and no recovery discs were made. :blush: With hindsight, it was having a problems a few months back (apparently V3000's overheat due to a design fault), so I should have get her to get one made, or made it myself :oops: I must confess I am in over my head here- I found the registry code on microsoft (support.microsoft.com), which is of little help doe to the OEM installed system and refers to recovery methods to be used beforehand, and since I don't know what they are... :rolleyes: Does anyone have any advice about what I can/should do? I'm quite happy to take it to a shop, just wondering if there is anything I can do here beforehand. Broken Laptop = $$$$ to fix! Thanks in advance for your assistance and advice!	Sick Puppy (6959)
716022	2008-10-30 09:57:00	Since it looks like its an AMD system, was XP SP3 installed before this happened? By the looks of it, that STOP C000218 error can happen with AMD systems and SP3	Speedy Gonzales (78)

716024	2008-10-30 11:18:00	Call HP (owns Compaq) and ask for a Recovery CD for your machine, quote the model and build number/s (usually on a sticker on the bottom of it), think they usually are about $70-80; there should be a XP product key number there too, you'll need that to re-install.	feersumendjinn (64)
716025	2008-10-30 19:09:00	Being a compaq, it may have put in the i386 folder on the drive - Sometimes this works sometimes not, sometimes it wont complete, or may wipe the drive, but if you had recovery CD's it would any way - but if you can boot into safe mode with Command prompt, at the prompt . Reboot the PC in Safe Mode with command Prompt ,You should then have something like C: documents and settings\your name\ Type in CD C:\I386 <Enter> Type in winnt32 . exe <Enter> Agree to anything, this should then reinstall windows as doing a repair install ( From #2 below) . When asked, enter the product key that’s on the Case or on the box the CD Case / Packet the XP CD came in, it will reboot several times this is normal, it will take approximately an hour . How to do a repair install: You will need your 25 digit product key for this . Place XP CD in drive: Reboot or shutdown and start PC . 1 . When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD . 2 . Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen . 3 . Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console . 4 . In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement . 5 . Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP . NOTE: if it doesn't locate your old OS STOP! As any further actions may result in wiping your data . 6 . Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup .	wainuitech (129)
716026	2008-10-31 11:04:00	Hey guys, thanks for the inputs- Wainuitech, my flatmate deosn't have the XPCD's- it was OEM installed, but having said that, I'll remember that for when mine craps itself- cheers! . Feersumendjinn, thanks too . As it turned out, some of our computer techies stepped up and said 'we'll do it in our lunch hour'- didn't know whether to hug them or run! lol Seriously, they've sorted it through using the recovery partition which thankfully restores it to the day it left the factory but keeps the files saved! Techies said that it could have been anything and there isn't much she could have done to prevent it . . . blimey . :horrified I've now installed all the microsoft updates, AVG and flash, and we'll be sorting Office (or Works, whatever!) come Monday . . . thanks for your inputs, and I have to say my flatmate was darn lucky! Methinks I'll keep this post open to see what happens with the office programs to be installed- no discks for those either, just a microsoft peice of paper with no discernable key on it . . . :illogical	Sick Puppy (6959)
716027	2008-11-03 06:39:00	Well, I spoke too soon- I forgot about the problem it had beforehand- every now and again the laptop freezes- simply refuses to function, and sometimes does this to a blank white screen (White screen of death? lol). It was doing this before the BSOD incident, sad to see nothing's changed! Does anyone have any suggestions? In the meantime I'll get to updating the BIOS/ Compaq software, and seeing if I can download Works 8 based on her Microsoft Product Identifier (that 'blank piece of paper" I referred to!)... thanks again!
