2008-10-30 04:50:00 | Every time I come out of a screen saver situation, or hibernation - in fact sometimes in the middle of running some program my computer starts to dial my server (yes some of us are still on dial up). It's irritating - I like to decide when to dial myself. But I have no idea how to stop it doing this. Have I a virus? All comments welcome. Tom

2008-10-30 05:04:00 | You probably do have a virus, although it could be an innocent program trying to update. | pcuser42 (130) | |
2008-10-30 05:05:00 | More than likely, you have a rogue dialer. | lakewoodlady (103) | |
2008-10-30 05:09:00 | Easy enough to stop - But what OS do you have - XP or vista? If its Xp, click Start/Control Panel/ Internet options/ Connection Tab/ Select " never Dial A connection" As Shown Here (www.imagef1.net.nz) then it will only dial up when you double click your dial up connection. Download from my sig, malwarebytes, and update / run in full scan mode and see if it picks up any thing, delete anything it finds.

2008-10-30 05:10:00 | Open up Internet Explorer and go Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab. Make sure "Never dial a connection" is selected. Have you scanned your computer for malware and viruses?

2008-10-30 07:59:00 | Thanks for the advice chaps. I use XP. I could have a rogue dialer - I do keep seeing something telling me it has not been able to update. But I admit I haven't checked the origin of the message. Anyway I have gone the route of control panel etc and told it not to dial as recommended. I presume that will cure things. I do regularly check for viruses etc and have not found anything lately. Tom

2008-10-31 22:47:00 | Gosh thanks Speedy. I will look into Java etc but I do seem to be OK as regards the constant dialing now. I may be getting out of my depth if I do any more. I have a remarkable ability to follow directions carefully and still crash the computer and have to call in my expert to fix things. However I will slowly - very slowly try to do more. Tom
