Exchanged 512Mb of ram for a faulty stick
Booted the computer fine - test ram fine,
put the jacket panel on - computer won't boot
take jacket panel off - boots fine???

Can anyone help me with why this is happening.

717060 2008-11-04 00:39:00 I've had this before, seemed the door was pushing down on the RAM and causing it to not contact properly, probably why the 1st chip failed.

Never found a real resolution. Use it without the door on. :D

I assume this is one of the lappys with the ram slots next to each other (www.laptoprepair101.com), not one on top of the other (i35.photobucket.com)?

sorry I should have defined it.
This is a desktop. so no pressure on ram.

717062 2008-11-04 00:51:00 Its not the position the PC is in? On its side, upright?

The side panel or is it a full sides and top arrangement?, isn't touching anything else?

- doesn't seem to matter - as long as the jacket cover is off

Have you checked the back of the motherboard for shorts? Made sure nothing is contacting with the case, except where the screw holes are?
Also, is there a case open sensor? Makew sure it's disabled in the BIOS, it may somehow be messing things up.

717065 2008-11-04 01:05:00 Rechecked - all looks like a clean / secure attachment.
Nothing touching it shouldn't.

Some Compaq's had a cover switch which could be deactivated in the BIOS.

I wonder if it's possible that it has one which is faulty and the computer is being shut down when the cover is fitted as opposed to the opposite.

Long shot I know.

717067 2008-11-04 01:23:00 Long shot - but good idea!
I have looked but didn't see any visible switches.
I will look in the bios on the next boot (installing service pack 3 right now)

is it too hot?
