716668 2008-11-02 10:28:00 when i attempt to run disk defrag on my win xp laptop, i get message that i dont have enough space and i need at least 15% of disk space to run it effectively and then it prompts to run it anyway by clickin on 'yes' or 'no'

What i want to know is if i run it anyway how effective this will be? Does not having enough space simply mean it will only take long time to defrag or will it not defrag properly at all.

thanks

716669 2008-11-02 11:34:00 It is telling you that your HDD is too full to perform the defrag operation, move/transfer as much of your data as possible to an external drive or cds/dvds to clear some space. Running the HDD that full will also slow your computer down as your programs use a space called a 'swapfile' or 'pagefile' on the HDD to store parts of the running program.

If you run Defrag as is, chances are it wont complete and possibly keep restarting continuously, and may possibly corrupt your data.
Do as suggested, then run Defrag from Safe Mode (press F8 while booting to select this), it will run much faster.

716670 2008-11-02 17:58:00 run "diskcleanup" tick all you dont want. Also I find its a good idea to run defrag in safe mode beama (111)
716671 2008-11-02 19:29:00 You'd probably want something faster too, like defraggler or JkDefrag Blam (54)

Sufficient space is required for defrag to run as it needs to move files around in order to "stitch them back up" .

Having less than 15% free space may not be a problem if most of your files are fairly small but you could risk data corruption if they are not .

Either get a larger hard drive or give your current one a good clean out by uninstalling unused programs, deleting unneeded files and cleaning out the temp files with CCleaner .

If you use Outlook Express, ensure that the Deleted folder is emptied then compact all mailboxes (File>Folder>Compact all folders) .

716673 2008-11-04 16:38:00 Defragging with less than 15% just means that the defrag will barely do anything of consequence . It won't harm your computer in anyway .

XP needs atleast 15% free space to defrag because it cannot move fragments of system files which can theoretically take up to 15% or more . Large files will not be defragged if the free space is fragmented i . e . interrupted by fragments of system files .

If you want to defrag system files and/or under 10-15% free space, look towards commercial utilities like Diskeeper . I am currently using Diskeeper 2008 pro, and it has defragged my drives even when free space has dropped to 8-10% on each . It's really effective and runs in the background and defrags with idle system resources; no need for safe mode to defrag .
