| 716563 | 2008-11-02 04:23:00 | What I think is the easiest, and the cheapest and its FREE - is download RealVNC (www.realvnc.com) (click VNC Downloads - then free) - install it on the server, when you run it you get the set up options to select server or remote - you add in a password, then you add the program in on the PC you want to control From - open the program Type in the servers address (www.imagef1.net.nz) click Connect, type in the password and bingo theres the Servers Desktop (www.imagef1.net.nz) - click shutdown and its closed. You can always make a shortcut on the servers desktop As shown here (www.tacktech.com) then remotely simply double click it and it closes almost instantly - it will instantly kill the remote connection as well. The programs works on both windows 95 to Server 2003 and linux as well. Heres an example My Windows XP controlling LINUX Home Server (www.imagef1.net.nz) - you'll see the PF1 in the background :thumbs: |

VNC is a good idea though, and if it works for your setup then I'd strongly second wainuitech's suggestion, as it's one of the easiest options to set up. |

| 716565 | 2008-11-02 04:38:00 | Erayd - its NOT a actual Linux Server - in the October Issue of Australian PCUSER they had an altered Xubuntu OS and turned it into a Linux Home Server - much the same as windows Home server - its free and works damn well, all the programs like backing up etc are handled by free third party linux apps. Does basic Server - Digital TV Server ( with correct cards installed) media Streaming, and its real easy to setup to share on a windows network - all built in. USEROS Home Server (darrenyates.com.au) - its a shame they wont put the ISO file as a download - fair to say - I have several copies in various locations as backups. |

| 716567 | 2008-11-02 07:49:00 | server os DOES make a difference, linux I would ssh to, you could also setup a cron job to do it for you or if running X remote X session, takes some configuration the other, (Windows ver xxxxx ) VNC or net send (may not work as Ive never tried it).Or maybe even remote desktop there are options either way but you need to know the os so as to want options are open to you |
