| 497211 | 2006-11-07 06:41:00 | You guys Who write articles extolling the virtues of recent government moves against Telecom (June 2006, page 15) need to meet some people in rural New Zealand. A lot of us don’t have broadband at all, so hearing about the potential improvements for townies is a big yawn. I’ve been screaming at Telecom for years, trying to get broadband with no joy, and the latest government moves will be the last nail in the coffin for my chances of anything more than 40kbit/s dialup on a good day. After all, I live a huge 75km from the centre of Auckland, so I suppose I should have expected a third-world telecomms service when I moved here. How about an article on the future developments of broadband for rural areas? Extending ADSL more than 5km from a cabinet, satellite internet at a realistic price, etcetera. Name withheld Somewhere near Thames Juha Saarinen replies: Rural broadband (or the lack thereof) is a vexed issue. It’s not realistic to expect the full set of services people in cities receive if you live in outlying areas: the economies of scale just aren’t there. DSL has a very short reach, just 4–5km maximum, and much less for good performance (ADSL2+ speeds won’t be obtainable beyond 1.5km from the DSLAM). If you look beyond DSL, there are broadband alternatives in rural areas: ipStar satellite from ICONZ and Bay City; BCL Extend from Xtra and Inspire Net; WiMAX from Callplus/Slingshot (Northland and Gulf Harbour only); Wired Country wireless from Compass (Auckland environs); wireless services from Igrin, Wise Net, SouthNet and others. Just read that on the PCWorld site. How patronising. Oh dear, he lives in a rural area - how dare he complain, he should be punished with rubbish internet for daring to not live in a city. :angry And those Satellite plans are great if you're a millionaire... Juha is Telecoms spindoctor now? |

| 497213 | 2006-11-07 09:18:00 | It's a simple matter of economics. Work it out for yourself. The reply was not patronising at all - Juha stuck to the facts. If you move to the country then by definition, you cannot expect the same services as living in a city. Is criticising PC World really worthy of a thread on PressF1? If I were a moderator I'd have you up for sedition..... | andrew93 (249) | ||

| 497215 | 2006-11-07 10:27:00 | Economics are different between cities and the country. Distribution of almost anything is more expensive to rural areas, but especially expensive infrastructure. NZ Post takes longer to deliver to rural areas but I haven't heard you complaining about their speed 'bias'. The economic challenges in distribution are the same, whether you're delivering snail mail, internet or bombs. | TGoddard (7263) | ||

If I were a moderator I'd have you up for sedition..... I agree, and this is the same situation ALL OVER THE WORLD. I thought that their reply was good, and at least they spent the time to reply to poster. The situation is even worse in Australia, where in rural areas, even dial up speeds are poor. You should be complaining to the government about it, as they are the ones who are supposed to be providing infrastructure to NZers. Unless it is economic for a company to provide a service, why should they provide it, or is the orginal poster willing to spend some money on getting it setup in their area (I think not) There is a positive. If you did have fast speeds, you may find a huge influx of people moving into your area to take advantage of a nice area while working from home. |

| 497217 | 2006-11-07 10:55:00 | Fact of life when out in rural areas. I was lucky to get 9.6 on a radio phone but now they have gone to satellite. There was also no TV out there which was rather nice. I missed all the crap over 9/11. | mikebartnz (21) | ||

Thank god you aren"t a moderator as you could probably join Helens group who have used that law twice when it hasn't been used for a very long time. |

| 497220 | 2006-11-07 19:25:00 | I am aware there are masses of small towns and farms that are too far to get broadband. However, they shouldn't ever complain about it? On the news the other night were some people 6km from Levin who couldn't even get a phone on. They should shut up too? Because they chose to move to a newly developed area? Seeing how the forums are stuffed full of people complaing they aren't getting their new full speed broadband and complaining about caps, I think this guy has more to complain about. I get rubbish speeds too but at least I can have broadband, such as it is. I have a friend who only has the choice of dial up - no Woosh or anything available either. It will cost Telecom a lot of money to upgrade the infrastructure to solve all those full speed problems - so we should keep quiet and accept the status quo? Its not helpful suggesting staellite services - most rural people can't afford it - have you seen the costs involved?! |
