496919 2006-11-17 03:32:00 More and more fluff, None of which in anyway alter the facts, which I will spell out for a few of you again.

Linux doesn't in any way cause your hardware to run faster or more stable.

Out of the box a linux install is worse then a Windows install, and can be catotophic unless the user has an established skill level with Linux.

Help with MS gear is available at every level, locally, ask the person next to you, Take a few seconds.

And back to my opinion, The gimp is great, stunning even for a homebrew app, But not in the same league as PS, Granted skilled users can get excellent results at some tasks but overall the two programs are light years apart.

Blah blah blah, Not that I really care, an OS should just shut the hell up and stay hidden, Its not about bells and whistles its about ease of setup and enabling the use of the programs people want to use, Hence the failure of Linux to make headwind on the desktop.

Out of the box a linux install is worse then a Windows install, and can be catotophic unless the user has an established skill level with Linux.Only in terms of usability for someone who is already familiar with Windows. I dare say someone familiar with Linux (and not Windows) would say the opposite of what you claim. Windows is far worse security wise - who in their right mind would run everything as root? (bring on the viruses). With Linux you can only hose your own home folder, and if you kept backups restoring should be a very easy task. With Windows, you can hose your entire system with relative ease, and the only backups that can really help are whole-disk images.

Help with MS gear is available at every level, locally, ask the person next to you, Take a few seconds.Help with Linux is also available at every level, locally and globally, at no cost. Takes a few seconds (IRC). Forum support is also great.

But not in the same league as GIMP. Granted, skilled users can get excellent results at some tasks but overall the two programs are hundreds of dollars apart. What GIMP lacks in 'out of the box' functionality is easily expandable with numerous plugins.

Blah blah blah, Not that I really care, an OS should just shut the hell up and stay hiddenVery true. Windows complains constantly about security if you don't update it, it needs constant TLC in the form of malware scans etc. Linux just shuts up and does its job.

It's about ease of setup and enabling the use of the programs people want to use.
To install something on Windows, one has to go through the motions of finding the installer, downloading it, running it, and deleting the installer afterwards. Most linux software can be as simple as "apt-get install <software>" (or for those who prefer a GUI, just tick the box and click 'apply').

Its not about bells and whistlesWhen windows gets rid of most of its useless notification balloons I will be a lot happier with it. Bells & whistles should be (and are on both Linux and Windows) optional. There is you want them, but not necessary. Only problem is, windows enables most of them by default.

Hence the failure of Linux to make headwind on the desktop.I disagree. I think it's more due to marketing than anything else, and the fact that most of the large assemblers are locked into long-term agreements with MS.

Both Windows and Linux have their good points. Depending on the situation, sometimes Windows is the better choice, but sometimes Linux is. And guess which one has a faster rate of innovation?
