2008-11-03 05:19:00 | Thanks Linw Tried that and it didnt make any dif. It happens when I open docs from anywhere. I rarely use the default. The long startup happens when just starting word without opening a document. Did you try what was written in Post #9 - from every thing I have read it fixes the problem if the OS is XP - As for vista - couldn't find any fixes apart from contact links to Microsoft :( What can also cause problems is any add ins - clickon start, in the search type in Run ( press Enter) or if the run command is on the right click that - in the open run box type in WINWORD.EXE /a Press Enter - if word opens fast then the problem is with one of the add ins. - Also try installing the Office 2007 service Pack - there area lot of fixes, one may cure the problem.

2008-11-03 05:27:00 | Been looking into this problem _ found several ways to fix it if the OS was XP and office 2007. BUT since I can't replicate the problem this is only a guess if it will work, the fix below is the same if the OS is XP - The problem is with the file associations - office is getting all twisted up till it opens, Now Vista Being vista they have changed some of the options, so it has to be changed by third party programs, make sure if you try this to remember what you did so you can reverse it. The fix if the OS is XP is to change the line mentioned below, so it may or may not work for Vista ??? Download The program in option Number 3 (www.annoyances.org) install it, follow through the instructions on the page. When you get to the list as shown , select .docx , then on the right click Edit - in the line that says Choose The Application to carry out this action, in the line add in ( in Bold) after winword.exe" /n /dde "%1" as shown here (www.imagef1.net.nz), then untick DDE - close the application, and see if Word opens any faster - as mentioned I found this in several places BUT it was all when the OS is XP. If it doesn't work go back and undo what you did. The other thing that crossed my mind - look and make sure the file associations are actually correct heres how in Vista (articles.techrepublic.com.com) NOTE: I did try this on a workshop Vista Ultimate with office 2007 Pro - it had no bad side effects, but of course mine was working as it should at the start. ---- Good luck. Thanks WT. Double checked file associations. Everything as as expected. It doesnt appear to be an association problem as it is slow when starting just the program. If you open a Doc(from Folder) once the program is started it loads normally. Also reluctant to play in the works computer as boss would not be happy as people playing has caused big problems in the past. Thanks again Colin

2008-11-03 05:59:00 | your choice of course, here's where I got answers from - see if they look like the problem you are having - Some are from sites where you require membership so I'll copy the answer here . ALL the 18 pages on google search and many sites I looked at apart from are either file associations or Add ins or printers. Excel slow Problems (excel2007-slow-open-file.blogspot.com/) Word and Excel both slow to open - Members site (http:) professional Answer From that site Hi, all, Thanks for the replies, i found the solution. MaduKp is right, something wrong with the file associations. the solution is: > Control Panel- > Folder Options- > File Types- > select "DOC" or "XLS"- > Advance- > select Action "Open"- > Edit > under "Application used to perform action:" > add "%1" at the end of the string. > uncheck "Use DDE" e.g. ["C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE" /n /dde "%1"] This will solve both Word and Excel open slow problem by double click. OR the most other common one is printer problems, you may need to uninstall the printer and reinstall it. I'm afraid there doesn't appear to be a simple "click this" and its fixed - to fix it, you may need to do some altering - get the IT person if its a work PC.

WT you beut :banana Tried loading from Run. Instant start.:clap Checked the plug ins. It was loading: 1. Google Desktop office addin.(Disabled it. No change ) 2. Buisiness contact Manager for Outlook and 3. Person Name (Outlook e-mail recipients) Both of which will not remove or Disable. They both seem to be entrenched. The Buisiness Contact Manager is probably the culprit for Outlook's slow start. Now, Knowing what is causing the problem I can go back to the tame Guru with the problem and hopefully he can sort it. Thanks again. You blood is worth bottling. Cheers Colin |

2008-11-03 07:28:00 | Success  Business contact Manager Hmmm the idea behind it is fine, but in practice its a pain in the backside - Usually when I install office, I select Custom and I usually exclude it. By starting by command prompt that bypasses all the add ins - so you did the exact right thing - worked through and discovered the possible culprit. From memory you can uninstall contact manager from Programs and features. OR rerun the Office install and select ( Following wording may not be right) Add remove components. Just a hint - make a copy of the .pst file first, that's all your mail and address Book, also you can open the address book and export that on its own ( I think - I know you can in 2003) That way if anything screws up you can put it back. Give the IT guy some "personal / Own discovered" ;) suggestions - then ask for a pay raise :D for doing his/her job. Edited: just an after thought - google desktop may still be " hanging in there" even if disabled, you can remove it by going into Control Panel/Programs and Features / Select Google desktop Search - then Uninstall - it wont hurt any thing, that's the first thing I remove from any vista PC if a customer has it installed, as its fighting windows own inbuilt search -- Dell's always have it installed normally.

2008-11-03 08:20:00 | Stupid me :o Forgot about one of the most basic / oldest fixes of Office if the above doesn't work - but the command to open does --- dhuuurrrr - (must be working to hard) REPLACE the Normal File , Go into the control Panel/Folder Options Select " show hidden files and Folders, untick Hide Extensions for known file types - close the windows. Click start , In the search type in normal.dotm If it doesn't find it, ( prob wont) click "search Everywhere", On the window that opens click on " Advanced Search" - Put the name normal.dotm in the Name Box, as well as tick "include Non Indexed, hidden and system Files As shown here (www.imagef1.net.nz) Then rename normal.dotm to normal.old, agree to any warnings about the program not working - close off the search and open word normally - Word will automatically recreate a new Normal.dotm file.
