496869 2006-11-07 20:59:00 If I could run my games on linux without much hassle or performance loss.... I would be using linux. Otherwise I am not touching it, apart from the occasional fiddle.

Linux in schools is a brilliant idea. But meh... IT in schools is pretty useless. I took IT every year I think. I learnt... how to type. And... how to use Word. Yay!!

Oh, and I think perhaps I learnt a bit of Excel too ;) But just... mindless... repetitive stuff, that you can learn by just hovering over the menu buttons and seeing what they say.

(IT classes at college teach you nothing!)

Rant rant rant... oops... slightly OT by now, heh.

496870 2006-11-07 21:56:00 SurferJoe46 if someone knows nothing about either OS then they will generaly be as happy with Xp as the latest Linux variant. This is all done listening to Pink Floyd's "Wish you were here"

Yeah! I had this problem with a friend (bear with me here..it's a true story) who had a missing portion of the index finger on his left hand.

He wanted to play the guitar....but alas! Missing index fingers on the chording hand are not conducive to good playing.

We taught him to play left-handed..VOILA!...

He never learned to play guitar right-handed and left handed playing is natural to him now.

So...YES, anything is possible.

496871 2006-11-07 22:09:00 When my computer comes back tonight it will have a 160BG drive partitioned 80/80. On the 2nd part I intend to install Ubuntu Linux. I sent off for a free disc & got back 5, I am supposed to freely distribute the other 4. I can send them out if the postage is not too much. Whether I stick with Linux or not doesn't matter. As long as I have tried it & can form an opinion. Google is gathering together a collection of "Tools" which may or may not threaten Microsoft. At least some one else is 'having a go' at MS. Hopefully, sooner or later, there will be a serious threat to MS. The only problem I have with Google it that it appears that all ones Data is stored on their Computers. One would prefer to have an OS, even in parts, on ones own computer. PJ:2cents: Poppa John (284)

Knowledge seems like it could be the most serious threat to M$ :D
And if I could get this Vodem working in Linux, there would be one option used a lot more here . (I regard this difficulty as a character flaw at Vodafone, not at Linuxville . ) Biased ? - hell no, I'm not a particular fan of OSX either . And I never use Atari these days . :D I just want to choose the OS myself, and let everyone else do the same .

Don't forget Ubuntu is just one "style" of Linux and if it doesn't take your fancy another Linux distro may appeal to you. Xandros, Mepis and SuSE (the free versions) each offer a different look/feel and all are suitable for novice users. :) Jen (38)

Poppa John have a look on the internet for a script called Easy Ubuntu, it simplifies the installation of some of the basics missing for Ubuntu such as Java and Flash etc. Its a script with a GUI that removes the need to use the command line for the software it can install.

There are only 2 things that are holding me back from adopting Linux for everyday use. Games aren't a big concern to me, I would happily dual boot with Windows for playing games.

1) Its difficult to install drivers. Driver support for Linux has improved greatly over the last few years and personally hasn't been a problem for a long time. But on the odd occasion when drivers aren't installed I find it a mission to install the driver and then confirm its installed properly. For example Linux doesn't always offer all the available refresh rates and resolutions for my monitor.

At least under Windows i can simply open up device manager and make sure all my drivers are installed properly. Device manger also makes it nice and easy to install drivers as well.

2) Installing software can be a bit of mission sometimes, i'm getting more and more confident with the command line so its less of a problem. But you cant argue that the simplicity of .exe and .msi files make life nice and easy.

I think if i could just figure out how to install drivers properly Linux would rule! Ive been trying to get Wifi working on my laptop for a while and its not an easy task. The Fedora forums are full of people having similar problems.

496877 2006-11-08 11:26:00 I'd have to agree with everything in that article... Linux just hasn't made the grade yet in the real world.

When it does I'll ditch MSoft like a hot potato
While a lot of people expect a Linux variant to be a clone of Windows it will never make the grade. It is not Windows which in my opinion is too dumbed down. I could set up a network far faster in 98 than XP because I new what I was doing and Linux allows you to do that in a similar fashion

Never expected Linux to be like Windows, in fact was hoping it was something better!

As for the networking- that was the ONLY thing that Linux did well.

I'm still laughing about Jen's comment "Xandros, Mepis and SuSE (the free versions) each offer a different look/feel and all are suitable for novice users."
