2008-11-02 19:03:00 | Vista Buisiness MS Office 2007 Dell Insparon 1501 AMD Turion64Mobile MK36, 2 GHz 2 GB Ram, Running AVG (Work choice not mine) Scanned daily with AVG and Spybot. Occasionaly I scan with CC Cleaner. This is a work machine so cant do much to it. This problem has our resident Geek scratching his head. Have had it for 18 Months and it has always been like this. MS word (2007) takes forever to start. :badpc: Launching the program directly take an age.(15 Secs) It is so slow that when you click on a file in email or My Computer the system returns a "file not found" Message.(seems that it gives up as the program takes so long to start). Starting the program first then opening the file works OK A similar problem occurs sometimes with Excell. Outlook is also slow starting. MS Office problem???????????:badpc: I have a desk top running the same programs and it opens very fast compared to this machine. Any help very much appreciated Cheers Colin

2008-11-02 19:10:00 | Seeing its a Dell - Does it have Google Desktop Search ? If so try disabling or remove it - that can cause programs open slow as it index's every thing and is crap any way compared to the inbuilt windows Search.

2008-11-02 19:42:00 | The work PC, does the email / office documents run from a server or locally. No server anywhere. The desktop is my own stand alone. The laptop I operate from home on Wireless BB. The two are not connected. I only mentioned the Desktop as a comparison I made.

2008-11-02 22:01:00 | I can remember encountering a similar problem years ago but can't remember what we did to solve it! With these sorts of problems my inclination is to think about your data. Word looks at data as it opens so it can display docs with the Open command. But your problem is made more difficult by mentioning that Excel and Outlook can suffer as well. If both docs and spreadsheets are in the same directory, possibly the "funny data" idea could still apply. But the Outlook is out of field. Maybe you have more than one problem? It is easy to test the 'data' theory, though. Change Word to default to another directory and start it up. Very quick and very easy. At least you will learn something definite from this test. Interested to hear back.

2008-11-03 04:32:00 | Been looking into this problem _ found several ways to fix it if the OS was XP and office 2007. BUT since I can't replicate the problem this is only a guess if it will work, the fix below is the same if the OS is XP - The problem is with the file associations - office is getting all twisted up till it opens, Now Vista Being vista they have changed some of the options, so it has to be changed by third party programs, make sure if you try this to remember what you did so you can reverse it. The fix if the OS is XP is to change the line mentioned below, so it may or may not work for Vista ??? Download The program in option Number 3 (www.annoyances.org) install it, follow through the instructions on the page. When you get to the list as shown , select .docx , then on the right click Edit - in the line that says Choose The Application to carry out this action, in the line add in ( in Bold) after winword.exe" /n /dde "%1" as shown here (www.imagef1.net.nz), then untick DDE - close the application, and see if Word opens any faster - as mentioned I found this in several places BUT it was all when the OS is XP. If it doesn't work go back and undo what you did. The other thing that crossed my mind - look and make sure the file associations are actually correct heres how in Vista (articles.techrepublic.com.com) NOTE: I did try this on a workshop Vista Ultimate with office 2007 Pro - it had no bad side effects, but of course mine was working as it should at the start. ---- Good luck.

I rarely use the default. The long startup happens when just starting word without opening a document. |
