718030 2008-11-06 02:31:00 I have recently installed broadband on an XP (SP2) desk top machine.
Prior to the installation we had a fully functioning dial up modem on COM3. After the installation we could not use dial up.
A check via “Control Panel/Phones & Modems/Modems” revealed the message “SoftV92 Data Fax Modem” – “Not present”.
A check via “Connect to/ISP name/Properties/General” revealed the message “modem removed SoftV92 data Fax Modem [COM3]”
A check via “Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager/Ports” revealed only [COM1}, [COM2]. & [LPT1] ie no COM 3

The broadband ISP is of the view that it is most unlikely that installing the broadband has resulted in the removal of the soft modem and the non-availability of the COM3 port. However the loss of the modem following immediately on from the installation of another internet device (the broadband router) seems to much of a coincidence to me.

I have checked the original disks that came with the computer in the hope of finding a way of reinstalling the modem and/or its drivers but all there is, is a total system restore disk and I would rather not do a total reinstall.

Can anyone advise me how I could recover my soft modem?

Cheers

718031 2008-11-06 03:14:00 I noticed a similar thing here. I'm on broadband at the mo. BUT, if I create a dialup connection in XP. (the dialup modem is installed, and working).

I can create the shortcut so its on the desktop.

BUT after a few days, or maybe a week (for some reason), the shortcut is still there, but the original connection disappears from Network places

But the modem is still working / in device manager

You want to look in Control Panel:

System - Hardware - Device Manager - Network for the dialup adapter, and Modems for the actual modem itself.

Also Control Panel - Modems. Is it showing?

If not, find out what model it is and download a driver from the net.

718033 2008-11-06 08:19:00 Is your broadband modem internal or external?
If internal, maybe it is conflicting with the internal dial-up modem (using the same IRQ), though this would normally be flagged as such in your Device Manager list.
Perhaps get an external dial-up modem?
