| 498732 | 2006-11-13 10:53:00 | Yep, I agree Bruce, if that drongo got hold of the pistol he could have committed mayhem. If he walked into a gun shop with a machete, counting on the person serving not having a gun, what exactly did he intend to commit? He counted on the machette being the superior weapon and so he could make the rules, he was wrong in his counting but unfortunately was only wounded a bit. The shop owner had the potential to commit mayhem, but didn't, the intruder's aims were a little foggy, but unlikely to have a great deal of consideration for the rights of others. | R2x1 (4628) | ||
| 498733 | 2006-11-13 10:58:00 | And what if he was on P and he got the . 45 off the gunshop guy? What if he then shoots everyone in the place, then shoots whatever police turn up with the unregistered . 45 semi automatic handgun the shop owner has been keeping? If you are going to run hypotheticals, they go both ways . So now the police are supposed to treat the law -- to misquote Pirates of the Caribbean -- as "more a set of guidelines"? They pull over a stolen car, find someone inside with a loaded . 45 . Naturally, they go up on a firearms charge . They walk into a gunshop and find the owner has a loaded . 45 illegal gun under the counter . They give him a bollocking and walk away . That is not the law . And justice -- for all its faults -- is best metted out via the law rather than a constantly in flux set of personal perceptions about who "deserves" punishment and who does not . Bruce, he was not exactly walking in there for a pack of smokes now, was he? What do you think he was going to do with the guns he was intending to steal from the shop? Yes, gunshop guy was an idiot for not getting it registered (and we have no idea as to the circumstances of it not being registered), and in any other circumstance than this, if the cops caught him with the gun in his possession there should have been hell to pay . Since we are not dealing with hypotheticals, lets look at the armed robber who was literally stopped in his tracks from doing any more harm to anyone else- better him than the shopkeeper going about his legitimate business, who I would imagine has to relive that incident every day . Having never shot anything/one I have no idea how that would feel- I bet it feels pretty bad- but better that then the thought of being shot or having his goods used to rob/ maim/ kill other people . Has he learned his lesson? Oh, I would say so . Will he now ensure that every firearm in his shop now and forever more are registered? Oh, hell yeah- as it is, the Police will be watching him like a hawk, assuming he is even still allowed to trade- it is quite possible/ probably that his working life has he knows it is over . . . no gun license means no selling firearms . . . is taking him to court really going to enforce the rule of law and give justice for all? :2cents: Phew, rant over, I'm off to bed . :) |

And will someone tell Sweep we did away with hanging people here about 1956 - regardless of what they do elsewhere. So he won't get his death wish, in spite of the smoking gun. (No, that's not an invitaition to start discussing the rights & wrongs of that. It's regularly established that a vast majority in this democracy don't want the death penalty back, so rants on that are simply... rants) |

Walk into a Dairy with a knife looking to rob the place, they give you the money, and if they have balls they throw a tin of baked beans to the back of your head. Walk into a gun shop holding a machete, not a knife but a machete... you get whats coming to you. I would have issues if Dairy owners had guns under the counter, but not gun shop owners. You walk into a shop that sells tasers holding a knife, do you really expect to get away without being shot with 50000 volts. I have no probs for taser shop owners having tasers as protection, or ninja supply shops having swords and death stars for protection. So where I stand is; no charges for shooting the dude/moron he should be thanked by the police for hindering a potential criminal, but if his gun was illegal he should be held accountable for that only. |

| 498736 | 2006-11-14 00:05:00 | Having worked in a bank I would have liked the extra protection a .45 under the counter could give me. He got what was coming, let's face it - he was probably going to rob the gun shop so he could then go and rob someone/something else with a gun rather than a machete. And to say "leave it to the police to catch the perpetrator". What a load of bollocks!! They are overworked and understaffed as it is, and a case like this would end up being near the bottom of the pile. If you walk into a shop with a weapon, your intentions are pretty clear, and the more crims that get some come-uppance from the store owner/teller/cash handler the better, I say. |

Anyway.. since we all throwing hypotheticals around... guy walks into a gun shop carrying a machete, threatens dude behind counter who steps away and allow perpetrator to take whatever he can carry. Perp is then NOT found or arrested (police been pulled off criminal investigation to help fill the governments coffers by pulling over people with rear taillight not going).... perp at a later time passes gun off to mate who holds it while raping/killing the wife/husband/kid of any of the forum members... who ya gonna blame? If you found out the dude behind the counter had a gun and could have stopped the entire thing, I bet hes gonna be getting some flak. As much as I am against bush-justice/vigilante-ism, maybe its time the police did have some help from the public (those in a position to do something). Or we could sit back and say "But it will never happen to me" |

| 498739 | 2006-11-23 03:22:00 | I read the story in the paper a few days ago and I couldn't believe my eyes. The guy defending himself is now after everything else going to be victimized by the police. He doesn't qualify for legal aid (unlike most of the scumbags that go through the "justice" system) so he gets to be financially ruined in the bargain. Too bad he wasn't a Labour politician -- perhaps then the police would have decided it "wasn't in the public interest" to charge him. I found his website and donated a few bucks to his defense fund. If he's got an argument to answer to the charge, let him have the resources to make it. Greg Carvell Defense Fund (www.guns.co.nz) |

You should have asked me first!! There's no way you will get a ticket for having a rear tail-light out. But by golly if you are caught with both of them out you might be in hot water!!! |
