498243 2006-11-12 01:27:00 Though this thread is about "broadband", I suspect Trev has Go Large in mind.

Pctek is correct, heavy p2p/torrent users existed before unleashing and Go Large.

Remember Go Large is the plan being promoted heavily by Telecom/Xtra for general family use, online gaming, watching videos etc etc, night after night on TV and with newspaper ads and flyers.

They are supposed to have a fair use policy and traffic management/filtering, there is a list of programs that they are supposed to be targeting, and the restrictions are supposed to apply to peak hours 4pm to 12pm.
That should satisfy any concerns you have Billy.

However, the throttling for whatever reason, I suspect filtering, is/has been affecting everyone p2p or non p2p, 24/7, just ordinary people like myself, who like to watch a bit of Youtube, download some old time music files, or listen to Live365.

In other words they stuffed up, and they are not delivering what they are still promoting daily.

I agree with you there Terry, I wont be surprised that they don’t have a capacity to do this .

Yep, & they wont say that they have a problem, they blame it on people telephone lines, (I know they ask my dad to do speed test twice a day for the next few days & send it back to them & before this upgrade we got 3 . 5M)

498245 2006-11-12 03:03:00 The problem is the people, who use p2p / torrents, if p2p / torrents where banned outright then I think NZ internet speeds data caps etc... Would be a lot better.

Great.
Let's also ban video, photos and online gaming. Imagine the speeds.

They sure do! They tell me my lines are too good!

498249 2006-11-12 05:49:00 Seems only a list of software are affected by the traffic management policy. These may be operational all days, all peak hours irrespect if you have downloaded 700MB or not.

On a different side, they have fair use policy which says only about the issue of 700MB but not the issue of 100MB. They also say at most 1% of customers will be placed on this policy :p If you carry on doing this for month(s) of using heaps of bandwidth they can take you off the unlimited plan and make you get a different plan altogether :D

498250 2006-11-12 05:57:00 Now basing on Telecom's own policy words, how does a person use the internet non stop around the clock for some days playing music, vids, games and communicating (like they do on television adverts), not using P2P without getting on the bad books - not blowing the daily 700MB

Such as, basing on Battle-Monkey's own words, "it seems like I haven't eaten in days".

Nor is this doing all things at offpeak b/c like the adverts of the guy on TV or on the newspaper he wakes up gets changed in a suit goes to work and then after work and in the w'end he uses the internet. Basing on that scenario I struggle to find a way how Telecom can see how its feasible.

498251 2006-11-12 06:54:00 You probably would care more if it was affecting you.
You have bitten the wrong end of the banana pc. I wasn't talking about the present, I was talking about the past, and now that the heavy users are being squeezed into a smaller pipe and haver to compete with each other, I am getting consistently better speeds 24/7, so I could care less.

The other thing that most wingers seem to be forgetting is that as far as speed goes, all bets are off once you leave the end of the Southern Cross cable, and download speeds from overseas will always be overseas-traffic dependent. I get great speeds for anything in NZ but results for international sites are still a movable feast.

I accept that there are hardware problems around the country, but I think that they are probably the exception because we would have heard the screams long ago if it had always been that bad. I wouldn't overlook the effects of the newly unleashed spreading their wings and going for it big-time (or trying to) in the larger population regions. though.

As for the 1% argument, that just goes to show how the very few can thoroughly louse things up for the many. My piddling 1GB per month had to compete for bandwidth with people who probably did that much every hour, so where's the equity in that?

It will all settle down in time.

Cheers

498252 2006-11-12 06:59:00 The only people lousing anything up is Telecom, They are selling a crap product and wrapping it up in millions of dollars worth of advertising.

No one is able to use it as it is being marketed. End of story.

As for the "heavy downloaders", This plan is being marketed at them as well, Hell, I have downloaded over 2Gb of mods for a game today, does that make me a bad person?, I pay my bill just like everybody else.
