717358 2008-11-04 09:04:00 I have been experiencing a very frustrating problem with my Windows XP computer lately.

Sometimes when I place a disk into the DVD-ROM drive, it starts up fine but then simply stops working after a few minutes. If I try to access the drive through Windows Explorer or My Computer at this time it will just show up blank, like the disk is empty. If I attempt to access it with the command prompt I get an "Access is denied" message.

Usually the only way to get the drive working again is to restart the computer, which is pretty annoying since mine takes about a quarter of an hour to start up. And even than the problem usually repeats itself all over again.

I have tried downloading and running the "Resolve CD Access Problem" Guided Help from the Microsoft Knowledge Base site, which seemed to help temporarily (and also mucked up iTunes, which I had to reinstall), but then the problem just came right back again a few days later.

Hopefully someone knows of this problem and can offer me some advice.

717359 2008-11-04 09:16:00 Have you checked the Event Viewer log for error messages when this happens?

You can find the logs under Control Panel > Admin Tools > Event Viewer log. Have a look at System and Application logs.

Your computer shouldn't be taking 15 minutes to finish loading the desktop either.

What are the spec's of the PC - RAM , CPU

Also , when the PC first Boots, does it appear to "Hang" when detecting the hardware, or is it slow when the OS is loading.

I found multiple entries of these two different types of CD-ROM related messages under the System category:

It has 2GB of DDR RAM and an AMD 64 Athlon 3200+ CPU. It goes fine until it loads Windows and I click on the username to log in. It just takes a very long time to load on all the programs that run at startup (you can see these from my HJL log on one of my other posts pressf1.pcworld.co.nz).

I've always just assumed it took so long because I have so many startup items and an old IDE hard drive.

717363 2008-11-04 11:03:00 Try changing the IDE cable (If its IDE)

Look in device manager, (or the BIOS), and see if its in PIO or DMA mode

How do I do that? I just tried looking in both the device manager and the BIOS and I couldn't find the setting.

717365 2008-11-05 01:49:00 Download the UBCD (www.ultimatebootcd.com) ISO, burn it to a CD using ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com), boot off it and run HDD and RAM diagnostics.

Make sure the HDD diag you run is from the manufacturer of your HDD, run Memtest86+ for the RAM.

Wherever it lists the hdd's / cd's / ide devices in the BIOS

Double click on it, it should show if its PIO, or DMA

In device manager go to IDE / ATA / Atapi controllers. Click on the + whatever / IDE connection the device is on. Then the advanced settings tab

717367 2008-11-05 02:04:00 In device manager the "Let BIOS select transfer mode" box is ticked and "Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra33" is selected. samnorr (13776)
