718162 2008-11-06 19:36:00 In the last few days, this PC for some reason wont boot first time

The monitor LED comes on. The POST screen comes up.

BUT nothing comes on the screen after.

But, if I turn the monitor off, then on. It comes on, (I see the screen then it turns off (the monitor)

I have to reset like 4-5 times, before the bloody thing brings something on the screen. After that its fine. I can use it for the rest of the day.

Its only in the mornings this prob happens

I downloaded the seagate DOS tools, (burned it to cd, its a little ISO) to test the hdd, but the bloody mouse wont move lol. Is there a trick to this?? If so, what is it? I pressed nearly every key. I got nowhere.

I've just changed the SATA cable, to see if that'll fix it (probably wont know, till tomorrow morning, if this was / is the prob).

And I've just reinstalled Windows, since I thought something like the drivers were stuffing things up. Obviously, its not

718163 2008-11-06 19:59:00 Why don't you download Seatools.
:)

718164 2008-11-06 20:01:00 I'll try the Windows version. I think I got the right file now Speedy Gonzales (78)
718165 2008-11-06 20:28:00 Can solve one of the problems - if your mouse is USB it wont work - just downloaded the DOS version you mentioned, USB - NO mouse, PS2 - good as gold.

So Is suspect if the KB is USB the same will happen.

Seen that boot up problem before - sometimes it was the MB other times it was the PSU causing problems then it could also be a monitor problem - do you have a spare monitor to try in the morning to see if its that.

One of my workshop monitors started doing that - one day would turn on OK then next wouldn't or would turn on OK then suddenly stop  - changed monitor and it's fine.

718166 2008-11-06 20:34:00 Nope, both KB and mouse are definitely PS/2. Neither are USB

The arrow / cursor is there when I use the DOS version. I just cant get it to move

Or select I accept.

718167 2008-11-06 20:40:00 Oh shoot - sounds like it may be a board connection problem - might be similar to a customers PC here at the moment - sometimes the mouse moved but you couldn't click- even when doing a install ( selecting location etc), tried a USB mouse and that did work - customer agreed to change the board - works perfectly now.

EDITED: Tab Key changes the DOS from Accept to I Do Not Accept

718168 2008-11-06 20:54:00 I tried tab that didnt work either. I'm just testing the hdd with Seatools (the windows version), now that I've found it.

Its fine in windows tho.

Just doing the long DST now, its 1/2 way through

And will do the other long test after this, if it decides to finish lol

BTW, I'm using the cable/s you sent

718169 2008-11-06 20:59:00 Hey the time delay worked - microchip inserted to fail after a month :D ONLY JOKING

The problem seems to be the monitor not firing up first thing in the morning, so what has to be found out, is it the MB not sending the signal,(which could be the problem with the Mouse/KB as well) or the monitor playing silly buggers until it gets a bit of heat into it ??

Thats why I suggested another known good monitor - if it fires up tomorrow on a good monitor thats a start - dont ya hate the intermittent problems that only play up at certain times :angry

off to install a network under a house - oh joy

Just a thought - is the BIOS set to default settings - or reset it ??

718170 2008-11-06 22:06:00 The BIOS is reset now, I did it this morning . And reconfigured it

The test is so far so good . The 2 short and the long DST passed .

Just doing the long generic test now, its just over 1/2 way .

It looks like the PC is sending the signal, since the LED on the monitor is green .

It shows the post screen on bootup, the green LED stays lit . BUT nothing appears after .

I'll check the DVI cable / pins as well .

Altho, I dont think any of the pins will be bent (altho its possible) . Since up till now, its been fine .

Altho, if any of the pins were bent (on the monitor DVI/mobo connection), I doubt I'll be seeing anything at all . And I wouldnt be using it now .

718171 2008-11-06 22:33:00 OK , short and long tests passed. Didnt do the advanced test. As it says it may cause data loss.

Checked DVI cable/connections. Look fine to me.

All I did was change the SATA cable. So, may have to wait and see, if it boots first time tomorrow
