500091 2006-11-17 21:53:00 Just returned from India and it was a wonderful experience. While there I used cyber cafes (not easy to find) to email home.

On at least one occassion I lost an hour's painful hunt and peck of careful writing, because a server went down. From then on I composed in Notepad which saved a lot of frustration, and also caused some puzzlement from Indians who wondered why I was sitting at a terminal - offline!

Anyway, it occurred to me that it would be a lot quicker to sit in a hotel room, compose email etc, and simply upload it at the cyber cafe later. Can anyone think of a simple device which would do this?

500093 2006-11-17 22:06:00 Since you're writing it in notepad, you could just save a text file to a USB flash drive, then take that to the cybercafe and grab it off that. somebody (208)

That would depend on the value allocated to "simple", but one of those laser keyboards and a PDA might be portable enough.
Something like this sort of thing (http://www.virtual-laser-keyboard.com/).

:D :D Very cool and funnily enough I did think about that - but kinda high tech at present for travel.

Good suggestion but I didn't have a laptop with me . Had enough weight problems as it was, let alone not having the right plug adaptors for parts of India . Did you know that Indian hotel rooms often only have one plug (TV) and what's more, the power goes off as soon as you leave the room .

Trying to charge a camera, cellphone, and camcorder with a borrowed adaptor (which the owner also needed) was just one of many interesting challenges - but lots of fun too .

So I used Notepad on the cybercafe PC . I agree with your suggestion - some form of PDA with a fold-out keyboard and USB, plus a flash drive would be ideal .

500097 2006-11-18 00:01:00 Had a look this morning, my local cyber-cafe does not permit any use of the USB or floppy drives for fear of strange downloads. Scouse (83)
500098 2006-11-18 00:05:00 Looks like India and Nelson will just have to get a service upgrade. :) R2x1 (4628)

Interesting . One cybercafe was the same - they downloaded my pics from the SD card to a server and networked it to the PC I was using . And then lost the card!!!! But it turned up after a few minutes .

Other places had USB on the PCs which I just used without asking .

500100 2006-11-18 01:07:00 Welcome back, Winston .

Naturally we assume there will be pix posted here later - once you're completely unpacked & have told enough traveller's tales to satisfy initial home requests?
.
For starters - what kind of houses were you building for Indian families? Where?
Differences from our styles/materials? Cost compared with here?
How big a team? From which countries?

I guess that'll do for now . . .

Edit: A new thread for it would probably be better .
Keyboards don't really convey much exoticism - or not to me, anyway .
