Sorry the above is not part of the other main thread running already . Dont know if many would bother to hit the '"last page"

Below is my bit of ranting which doesnt need to be read as its in other thread

================================================== =======

According to the other thread the general consensus is that the waterfront stadium is not favoured due to:

Roading infrastructure issues, traffic jams with having a 60 000 seat stadium right in downtown .

Huge cost of building the stadium with rates going up for Aucklanders and also other tax payers forking money out for this . The amount of money can be better spent for health system and roading .

Obstructing views for downtown waterfront with a huge staidum smack right in middle of city and 'noise' effects to residents near stadium .

All i can say is i strongly favor the Waterfront option over Eden Park or anywhere else in NZ and to a lesser degree over any other brand new stadium elsewhere in Auck .

I don’t disagree with the reasons most people are giving against Waterfront stadium .
But what I do think is that the reasons/concerns are exaggerated .

For starters there will be traffic/congestion but its not like the stadium will be used 24x7 7 days a week and hold games 9 in the morning with people getting stuck in traffic .
It will be used mostly weekends and Fri nights when traffic congestion is probably at its lowest .

And I don’t think 60 000 stadium goers create traffic congestion equivalent to Auck morning rush hour not to mention every single game played at the stadium wont be at capacity every single time .

The waterfront stadium is very ‘central’ to public transport (rail and bus) . Yes those who wish to commute by car will not find easy car park but then again night events generally mean you can take some advantage of free after 6pm parks around the city .

I have lived in Mt Eden for years and traffic congestion around Eden park during games is worse then anyone can imagine - during the Lions tours, the traffic was chaotic . Road closures were in place around the dominion/sandringham Rd itself, with so much disruption to the residents and thru traffic .

And all this without yet expanding the capacity of Eden Park . Public transport as they say for Mt Eden is much more restrictive compared to the central city stadium which has easy access from South/West/East .

As for blocking view at waterfront with this huge stadium, herein lies the irony of NZ’rs - Everyone is so concerned about beauty/clean green image/environment etc which gives NZ its image around the world (which is great) yet it comes with a price – lacking behind other countries in everything else .

If we have a world class rugby team, let’s showcase with something bold and that gives a classy ‘image’ not just for hosting rugby games but other games/events . Otherwise we will just see the bloody Aussies and others snatch everything to hold and showoff to the rest of the world because NZ just doesn’t have it as we are forever busy with environment concerns and views and comfort zones of all NZrs . I mean for Waterfront residents nearby concerned with noise – think again, waterfront stadium won’t be used everyday to kill of their peace/sleep thru your noise reduction walls .

And yes we definitely need to get our roading infrastructure fixed in Auck and elsewhere and cut down the waiting lists for hospitals but for opportunities like this to showcase Auck/NZ and feel proud of what NZ can also offer apart from just its picturesque image doesn’t come along everyday . Its not like the roading infrastructure will stop if the waterfront will go ahead .

Having a waterfront stadium is really a bold statement by Auck/NZ that we the little isolated NZ can be right up there with the big guns and that to get it done we are prepared to spend a bit extra $$ and not squabble endlessly on whose views are getting obstructed . And personally I feel having a shiny makeover to Eden Park stadium in a poorly placed suburban area will still not give that world class edge and boldness that the waterfront stadium will have…no doubt .

499362 2006-11-15 15:10:00 Thanks for that link to the city's attempt to get opinions, you with the unpronounceable name.
(You might want to change that if you're stopping here? We're not big on lengthy roboticals. Even if you're a PR person. why not try something more cosy?)

It does show Auckland City's making an effort to think of all likely questions in the FAQs
(And if you admit you haven't read them first, you get dumped - which is great stuff that should be done by more questionnaires)

But irrespective of all the points made - and some are very good - the one that I find most important ( and have stated in another thread ) is simply ignored.

"How will the waterfront stadium affect views?". it says.
But it cops out by giving no answer - and the thousands of apartment owners who've organised their lives to get those views are entitled to be considered more than a rushed construction built simply for a rugby challenge.

The rugby contest will last a few weeks - and then what?. Most of these owners made decisions for their lifetimes.
The rest of us would normally yell like mad if someone stuffed up expensive choices we'd made in good faith.
So why has it become OK to do that simply for the World Cup?

Edit: Decided to apologise for suggestion this might be Auckland City PR. Then saw that all of the OP'a posts sang the same song, so decided not to.

499363 2006-11-15 19:08:00 I vote for Christchurch .

Any location in Auckland involving even more large numbers of people is madness .

499365 2006-11-15 20:08:00 RWC2011 - your arguments for a waterfront location are pathetic . Either someone's paying you to spin or you're a business/hotel owner downtown .

Anyone with half a brain knows that the costs will be something like three times what they're suggesting . And Auckland city traffic is bad enough as it is, without having to cater for 60 - 70 thousand more people congesting the fragile traffic infrastructure .

Get real, Mr Clark .

499366 2006-11-15 20:58:00 Thanks for the link . Of course I voted in favour of the waterfront stadium . . . it's a great idea .

As for it blocking peoples views . . . if you buy a central city apartment never expecting to have your view built out, well, you should have thought a bit harder I reckon .

499367 2006-11-15 21:45:00 The main aspect that RWC2011 has overlooked is the impact on Ports of Auckland commerce during the building process. Huge potential for the NZ economy to go down the gurgler (even more so than it already is) if the impact on container traffic is not fully recognised and mitigated against... johcar (6283)
499368 2006-11-15 21:48:00 As for it blocking peoples views...

Heh. Five dollars says that some taffers will complain about the noise and ambiance being generated by the stadium crowd and ask that they tone it down.

Hang on, wasn't P&O telling us just a few weeks ago that they were seriously considering cutting back on the number of ports they visit in NZ because we have too many of the things?

499370 2006-11-15 22:14:00 I lived in Auckland for 35 years before moving to Wanganui. In all that time, even back when Robbie was Mayor, the various Councils could not agree on anything. Parochialism at its worst. They cannot sort out the transport problems they have now, never mind the future. I despair of Auckland achieving anything. The best thing for them is to have one council to rule the lot. Even then with with ward councillers it will still be a shambles.

My vote is for Christchurch, Jade Stadium. Air NZ to run special cheap "Bus" flights between Ak & Chch, during any major event, either to a timetable or 'when full enough, fly'. PJ:2cents:
