718202 2008-11-08 04:07:00 Yup all 3 of these have the same OS - XP Pro

All are up to date. With exactly the same updates

All have ATI cards (the other 2 - 9550's, with DVI and VGA, this integrated x1250, with DVI/VGA,HDMI)

The only thing (in this, that arent in the others), is a tuner, and the HDMI card.

The monitor is plugged into a 6 way power board (not into the PSU).

The PSU has only got an on/off switch, hell it doesnt even have a voltage selection switch lol

AFAIK the power is fine. Since the phone, the printer, this PC, the modem / router are also plugged into this 6 way power board. And theyre fine

718203 2008-11-08 04:15:00 Try the monitor in a different outlet, even if on the same power strip. Murray P (44)
718204 2008-11-08 04:16:00 Ok. Will do.... I'll do it now Speedy Gonzales (78)
718205 2008-11-08 04:21:00 Could be wrong, but I suspect its a fault someplace on the board -

My Theory / Gut feeling - when its cold from being off over night it loses contact - when the PC is first booted you get brief graphics then it loses it (it tries) - once its been rebooted several times the heat has had a chance to build up and the circuits reconnect.

If I'm right then tomorrow morning when you boot from the Linux CD the same thing will happen - BUT if it is a windows software problem then it will boot from the Linux CD fine.

Had a customers PSU do that once - was a real pain - only in the morning, only once, second time it booted it was fine :(

Bit like the election isn't it -- will it or wont it ??:D

718206 2008-11-08 04:27:00 :2cents: As above if i'm quick enough I put a PSU in Thursday and had the prob of not booting through past post played round for ever then reset the RAM and been going like a rocket ever since !!! worth a try. jontee (11618)
718207 2008-11-08 04:30:00 I did take the ram out when I took the mobo out. As it was a bit dusty. So, I blew on it.

Next thing (If Ubuntu doesnt work), I'll take the sticks out and put each 1 in separately. And see what happens

Its just seems strange that since I built this in July, everything was fine till now

It never had this prob

718208 2008-11-08 17:06:00 OK, well it looks like a hardware fault somewhere.

I tried it last night as well. While watching the elections.

You can leave it off, for 3-4 hrs, (it doesnt have to be overnight).

It still wont boot. Until you reset it a few times.

I'll remove the mobo and take it back for a replacement next week. They'll probably have to order another one

But I think I'll hold onto it, till they get a replacement

718209 2008-11-08 22:44:00 Think I'll replace the ram first . Save me pulling the mobo out . BUT, if it still wont boot, I'll remove the mobo as well .

And replace that, or get a refund . And get another somewhere else .

Hopefully, they've got another MATX mobo . Or I'll have to go elsewhere to get it

Otherwise, they'll have to replace this case as well lol .

Since its their case, their mobo and their ram .

And an ATX board wont fit

718210 2008-11-10 01:06:00 Went back to the shop, they said it'll be better if I took it to them for them to test it. So may take it down the road tomorrow / sometime this week. They expected me to pay for it lol. If they tested it

I dont think so, its under warranty.

Came back, and tested the 2 sticks of ram for just over 2 hrs. With memtest

Tested each one separately, in each slot (the first 2 slots). Took about 35 mins for each pass / test.

Both passed in the first and 2nd slot.

There's not much else to check / test now besides the mobo

718211 2008-11-10 21:46:00 Went back again this morning, they've finally decided to replace the mobo.

They'll have to re-order one. They said it may have been the card reader (the BIOS may have been trying to boot from it, even tho the hdd was the bootdisk).

I dont think so. Since the system wouldnt boot when I removed everything, inc the reader.

They also said to update the BIOS, only thing is you cant because the later 2 versions are screwed. Try upping the video ram to 256 mb + it resets the BIOS to the defaults. Whats the point in using 128mb

One of them said the CPU is the prob, only thing is it'll probably be worse than what its doing now, if it were.

If it does it again, I'll get a refund and get something else. Probably an Intel mobo, hopefully, someone sells Intel MATX with firewire.

Otherwise the shop I'm getting this fixed at, will have to take the case back as well
