| 499828 | 2006-11-19 02:52:00 | C**p weather - rain, strong northerly winds - alpaca due 12 days ago seems to put the plug in and given up - roses all blown to bits - hazelnuts wind blown and not so interesting - cant go "riding on my bicycle". So altogether I think I'll forget this weekend. Oh go the Blacks. Aha. Playing midwife to an alpaca, eh? (So you obviously don't live in a city) I've always wanted some alpacas - or llamas- on my snall piece of Central Otago hill, but it's unlikely to happen. Interested in knowing about yours, though (Just the one - or a herd?) How long is the gestation period & how big are the babies? And has she had it yet? |

And has she had it yet? 6 - 5 wethers for grass mowing and a very expensive female (obviously the pregnant one) Got into them at first for mowing as can't stand sheep. Alpacas are camelids and are very low care. Gestation - supposedly 11 months but we're now some 2 weeks over - we're at little worried but the experts say not to. Babies - Cria are a bit bigger than lambs but grow very quickly, coming from the high Andes they have to be viable very fast or the predators will get them. They go very well on rough land and at a stocking rate roughly the same as sheep. If you get one - don't, get at least 2 as they are sociable animals and will pine if on their own. |
