500116 2006-11-18 01:21:00 I had thought a laptop was part of your baggage... :stare:
Can't travel with the laptop, it's got Win ME, so it won't go.:(

500119 2006-11-18 04:35:00 For shrinking photos, may I recommend a laundry I used ONCE, if they treat your photos like they treated my shirt, they would fit inside the "O"'s in your e-mail. R2x1 (4628)

500121 2006-11-18 04:45:00 Compressing roll film is much more "lossy" than jpeg, and you still can't email them. R2x1 (4628)

And on that very topic, I was very nervous about losing my camera and what eventually became 330 photos. So I burned them to CD a couple of times at cybercafes, so at least I'd have some saved.

Anyway, one CD has corrupted pics on it. Rather odd really - all of the photo is there but is broken up into about 8 different sized oblongs like a mismatched jigsaw. Fortunately it's only 8 pics although one was an arty shot I was a secretly pleased with. Thats life. :badpc:

500124 2006-11-18 10:01:00 Winston, I am not sure of what you want to do exactly but if it is just to get a bunch of photos home, why not invest in one or more big memory cards? The prices these days are quite cheap (compared to my first trip to India in 2001). Also, I was surprised to see (January this year) how many photo and computer shops offer to burn CDs. I came back in March with over a dozen CDs and over 7 Gbs of photos and film clips, and not a single error.

And do you take your photos on maximum resolution? If so, is it to print them A4 or poster size? The only time I took max reso photos was when I thought I just might print them larger than a 5 x 7. For example, in some of the temples of Angkor, Cambodia, I snapped many many photos of bas relief carvings on a lower resolution so I had enough room for film clips and high reso shots. I used 512 and a 128 Mb memory cards. BTW, getting cards larger than 512 could be problematical since burning to CDs have a max of 700 Mb and splitting the card into two CDs is beyond most photo/computer shops, and most do not burn to DVDs.

Finally, it is a good idea to buy memory cards that self-repair errors. Once in awhile my 512 card produces a jpeg or avi with an error so that file is junked. Luckily this did not happen when I was overseas, only more recently.

500125 2006-11-18 11:20:00 Good thoughts Steve. I used a 1GB SD card but in hindsight possibly 3 x 512 cards would have been safer.

As for resolution, my thoughts varied from day to day and I used to change it. Generally I used the second-highest setting on my 5meg Canon Ixus, and low compression. As you know, the more data in the photo, the more it can be cropped later on without loss of detail.

Having said that, I hardly ever print a photo these days, let alone 8 x 10 or larger. But you know, one day there will be that special pic.........
