I am thinking to move up to vista ultimate version. i am currently on windows xp pro sp3. though rather than clean install i am thinknig of doing an upgrade. has anyone done upgrade here?. how did it go?

718949 2008-11-08 21:38:00 For an upgrade to work correctly the XP HAS to be solid, bit like the foundations on a house, if the XP is shaky or damaged in any way Vista will be as well.

Some versions of Vista Dont allow upgrades, the only option is a complete install. From memory its only the full retail versions or upgrade versions that have the upgrade option.

Even MS recommend doing a clean install rather than an upgrade.

Just do a compatibility test before doing so This will give you an idea if you are going to encounter problems. Its not a promise of a clear run more of an indicator.

The compatibility test can be downloaded from M$

718951 2008-11-08 21:50:00 I guess a clean install is best but I did an upgrade in Feb 2007 and it went fine. Basically, if your system is stable like WT said, the decision is up to you. linw (53)
718952 2008-11-09 00:55:00 You should buy the upgrade version of ultimate though-there's a way to do a full install with an upgrade DVD :D Blam (54)
718953 2008-11-09 01:24:00 You should buy the upgrade version of ultimate though-there's a way to do a full install with an upgrade DVD :D Yeah you can, but its a pain since you have to do the install twice ;) wainuitech (129)
718954 2008-11-09 01:47:00 Yes-but good for those on a tight budget!:p:D Blam (54)
718955 2008-11-09 02:08:00 Many places are selling OEM these days without the need to buy hardware - thats cheaper still than an Upgrade Version. wainuitech (129)
718956 2008-11-09 02:10:00 What is OEM actually? Blam (54)
