| 718493 | 2008-11-07 10:20:00 | Hi, I have a Windows Vista Business running on my intel iMac and I'm really enjoying using it. However, it always sounds like it's writing the the hard drive and I can't figure out what it could be doing. The bootcamp drivers from apple were pretty rubbish so maybe that's something to do with it? Thanks |

| 718496 | 2008-11-07 10:47:00 | A good thing to do is to turn HDD space allocated to auto system restore down. You can find out how to do that here ("www.mydigitallife.info) Is your iMac really that quiet that you can hear the HDD's going? Or is your HDD just loud? Something to be concerned about? Check how much vista is writing to disk by right clicking on the task bar, and going to task manager. Go to the "Performance" tab and click "Resource Monitor". The second graph shows read/write activity, if it's consistently fairly high, then maybe a bit concerned. P.S. Hope the baby grand is treating you well, and go see "In Bruges", I think you'll like it. |

| 718497 | 2008-11-07 10:54:00 | Hey Thebananamonkey, I'm not so much concerned about the noise (OS X sounds the same). That resource monitor looks awesome: Image PID File Read (B/min) Write (B/min) IO Priority Response Time (ms) svchost.exe (secsvcs) 1032 C:\Windows\System32\perfmon.exe 120320 0 Background 75 svchost.exe (secsvcs) 1032 C:\pagefile.sys (Page File) 196608 0 Background 67 System 4 C:\pagefile.sys (Page File) 0 1048576 Normal 31 avgrsx.exe 3328 C:\$Mft (NTFS Master File Table) 4096 0 Normal 18 perfmon.exe 4736 C:\Windows\System32\en-US\azroles.dll.mui 3584 0 Normal 15 System 4 C:\Windows\Prefetch\TASKMGR.EXE-4C8500BA.pf 49152 36864 Normal 15 System 4 C:\System Volume Information\{ca802db0-ac47-11dd-98b9-001b6356b62f}{3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752} 0 9863168 Normal 12 System 4 C:\System Volume Information\{ca802db0-ac47-11dd-98b9-001b6356b62f}{3808876b-c176-4e48-b7ae-04046e6cc752} 0 44515328 Background 11 System 4 C:\Windows\Prefetch\CONSENT.EXE-40419367.pf 16384 86016 Normal 8 perfmon.exe 4736 C:\Windows\System32\wdc.dll 73728 0 Normal 8 System 4 C:\Users\William\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\T emporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\L72618O5\mountandblade_1011_ setup[1].exe 7700480 7860224 Normal 7 perfmon.exe 4736 C:\Windows\System32\en-US\fwpuclnt.dll.mui 32768 0 Normal 7 System 4 C:\Windows\Prefetch\DLLHOST.EXE-6389524F.pf 32768 20480 Normal 5 perfmon.exe 4736 C:\Windows\System32\httpapi.dll 30720 0 Normal 5 perfmon.exe 4736 C:\Windows\System32\en-US\dfsr.exe.mui 32768 0 Normal 4 avgrsx.exe 3328 C:\Windows\System32\perfctrs.dll 39424 0 Normal 4 avgrsx.exe 3328 C:\Windows\System32\dfsr.exe 588288 0 Normal 2 System 4 C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE 65536 106496 Normal 2 System 4 C:\$Mft (NTFS Master File Table) 0 8192 Normal 2 avgrsx.exe 3328 C:\Windows\System32\azroles.dll 384000 0 Normal 2 System 4 C:\Users\William\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\U srClass.dat.LOG1 0 29696 Normal 0 avgrsx.exe 3328 C:\Windows\System32\perfdisk.dll 31744 0 Normal 0 perfmon.exe 4736 C:\Windows\System32\pdh.dll 135168 0 Normal 0 System 4 C:\Windows\System32\config\SOFTWARE.LOG1 0 39936 Normal 0 System 4 C:\Users\William\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\U srClass.dat 0 86016 Normal 0 System 4 C:\$Mft (NTFS Master File Table) 0 8192 Normal 0 System 4 C:\$LogFile (NTFS Volume Log) 0 233472 Normal 0 System 4 C:\Users\William\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\T emporary Internet Files\Low\Content.IE5\ZHJMILXF 0 8192 Normal 0 System 4 C:\Users\William\NTUSER.DAT 0 36864 Normal 0 System 4 C:\Windows\System32\config 0 8192 Normal 0 System 4 C:\Users\William\ntuser.dat.LOG1 0 9216 Normal 0 svchost.exe (LocalServiceNetworkRestricted) 1140 C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Lo cal\lastalive1.dat 0 512 Normal 0 Anything out of the ordinary? Maybe Vista just does a lot more diskwriting things in the background. One thing interesting is that when I download a file, it sometimes hangs on "0 seconds remaining" in the copy from temporary to destination. The baby grand is treating me just fine :D. Saw In Bruges and it was alright... Any more film festival ones that you recommend? |

| 718500 | 2008-11-07 20:24:00 | I have explorer.exe hang on me occasionally when I do just normal file browsing, doesn't really inspire confidence. I do as little copying as possible, which obviously isn't ideal. When explorer.exe does hang, bring up the task bar [ctrl]+[shift]+[esc] and end it. Start it again by going File, New Task (Run...), and then just type explorer.exe. Can't wait for Windows 7. Probably just a clusterfrick of an application like vista, but we can be optimistic can't we? List looks OK. Avast! is far better than AVG, although I can't see that being your problem. You can't hear the HDD's on my computer because I've got a roaring great jet engine of a fan on them. I heard them once, which was the beginning of the end. Obviously the convection thing in iMacs means that the sound floor is far lower than say, butterfly wings and snow flake impact and such things. Link doesn't work just get a 403 access denied error. I can still see it... |
