2008-11-12 08:04:00 | Hi, for ages I've kept an XP comp: for the grandkids and a couple of card games. I bought it in a garage sale with no COA. Recently, SP3 offered to install; the which I accepted, but was refused (understandably). Since then I have been unable to get onto the 'net. No big deal for me as my other comp: is on Linux. A live CD (puppy) gets the 'net, as does xubuntu on the XP set up. I don't blame MS for cutting me off, if that's what they've done. My question is............is that what they've done? Thanks for any replies........................sarum

2008-11-12 08:14:00 | Common problem after Sp3 is installed - usually this fixes it - download Winsockfix (www.softpedia.com) run it, reboot - try Internet. Question - SP3 offered to install; the which I accepted, but was refused (understandably). Since then I have been unable to get onto the 'net. What do you mean by Accepted - but was refused (understandably) ??? Refused by Whom ??

2008-11-12 08:25:00 | Thanks both of you. No I've no CD; and 'winsockfix' needs the internet; which I can not get on the XP. Any thoughts on this, please. | sarum (6222) | |

2008-11-12 08:43:00 | You can download the winsockfix file Via Linux and save it to the HD, boot from windows and then run it - or download and safe to an external drive/ pen/flash drive, boot from windows and run. The file will download fine Via linux (xubuntu) - its only a download. Dont know what puppy has for a web browser, but I know xubuntu works Ok as I was mucking about with it a few weekends ago. EDITED: Hey Safari - thanks for that link  I was looking for it today and couldn't find the damn thing. The netsh ....... & winsockfix Didn't work on the PC I had problems with --- SP3 as well.

2008-11-12 09:12:00 | Sp3 affected my zone alarm if I remember rightly, and I had to repair zone alarm and take away part of that update. Will try and find my question post and link to it for you. Nope, the brain not working properly, I had a "Message 1 says - AirGCFG.exe - Entry point not found." error after SP3. The no internet error was after a normal windows update and I had to uninstall update, update zone alarm, then reinstall windows update. Sorry couldn't help good luck.

2008-11-12 19:19:00 | Thanks for your replies. I thought that MS had some devious way of messing things up if you had an illegal XP. I'll do the winsockfix this evening and get back if it doesn't work. Thankyou again for all your help...........................sarum | sarum (6222) | |
