501628 2006-11-23 22:30:00 Since they vary hugely in price, like $400 up to $1200 .... and I'm in the market for one.

I would like to know whether those mowers that says it had mulching options on it works well or not? I don't want to use a catcher if I can avoid it, I know most mowers would leave chucks of clipped grass on the lawn if catcher was not used.

More expensive models says it can mulch the grass to fine clippings and distribute evenly on the lawn, and they cost about $400 more.

So, anyone can give me some ideas would be appreciated. :help:

PS. Thanks for the all the reply on the Chainsaw thread I started a while ago, I bought a Black & Decker electric chainsaw at $150. It saved me a lot of time.

Cheers.

501629 2006-11-23 23:39:00 We bought a Masport 4 in 1 (via Trademe) several years ago.

It has a chipper thing in it which is great for feeding in small tree prunings, it mulches (with its extra attachment), cuts and does the side eject of clippings also. The last we don't use.

The mulch works well, but it won't do a good job if you use it on very wet grass or very long grass.
But a normal mulch is great.

501630 2006-11-24 00:02:00 Quite right PC..
We have a ride on with mulcher,it was new at the end of last season,it worked well mulching.
When we started the new season,we found that long wet grass wont mulch and clear quickly enough, consequently the thing clogged causing the belt to stretch and break.
So ok later in season but not early.

That's the one I've after, although probably end up with the 3 in 1 MSV model as I don't need the branch cutting feature.

501634 2006-11-24 03:30:00 we got a victor. proberly the only mower company that makes it own motors these days. nice 2 stroke mulcher. grunty and can mow anything anywhere :)

they havn't changed much in 30+ years so parts are not a problem.

edit: mulching is fine but you have to be a bit fussier. you can only mulch if the grass is long eenough but not to long or to wet.

501635 2006-11-24 03:31:00 This is what I have in my dreams to own next ( . deere . com/en_US/ProductCatalog/HO/series/ho_x500_series . html?link=lcff" target="_blank">www . deere . com) . . . I had a Craftsman 36" riding mower and loved it . .

Here's a trick for wet grass when you need to mulch it: Use one of those frying pan slippery sprays like PAM or a store brand . . .

It will take an application or two depending on the size of the lawn and acreage . . but it works to keep things from gumming up and choking . And always keep the blades sharp . . really sharp!

The site is for John Deere stuff . . . lots of very good graphics and code on this page too!!!!

That's a TORO . . and they are very fine mowers no matter what style .

Sadly, I had the chance to get in on the ground floor with the guy who invented the first one, and I helped him set up the welding jigs for the front throw reel-types for him .

They were beauts! Cut like a scalpel and were self sharpening too .

Briggs and Stratto motors were on them all .

I didn't figure it would be a big thing and told him I wanted to go a different way and have regretted it many times over .

I'd own NZ by now if I had stayed there .
