501446 2006-11-23 02:28:00 I give up on stupid useless DVD's. From now on all saves and backups go on floppy.

I have just lost all my backups. All I did was to add a file to a DVD. Then while I wasn't watching the stupid thing formatted itself. By the time I realised what was going on it was too late.

Oh well start again. I'm good at that.

501447 2006-11-23 03:01:00 Floppies are worse than DVDs - I put a file on a floppy using Win 2000 at school, after that only my Win 95 virtual machine (at home!) could read it. :( pcuser42 (130)
501448 2006-11-23 03:08:00 Please insert floppy disk 687 of 81336 and press ENTER to continue.

At $5+ for a pack of 10.

Yeah right :D

But then not everyone has 120GB to back up. Some people only have say, 1000 disks worth...

501449 2006-11-23 03:27:00 Its not the DVD's fault that it did that ;), is an end user problem ;) :)

Was this a DVD-RW?

501451 2006-11-23 04:41:00 They don't format themselves, theres a question along the lines of do you want to?

And adding to an already written DVD is ok, up to a point. Then it stops liking it.

Get yourself a little 20Gb Seagate off Trademe or something, and a USB to IDE adapter - dirt cheap from PC stores - and back up all your stuff to that.
No hassles.

Yes a dvd.
And it didn't ask. I clicked on burn and left it to do it's job.

501453 2006-11-23 07:21:00 You dont use RW's for backup anyway.
Just use R's you can always make it a multi session, and it wont format itself when your back is turned.

501454 2006-11-23 08:32:00 As mobiles, dead floppies don't catch the light so fetchingly as dead DVD's or CD's. They don't Frisbee as well either, obviously time to be superseded. R2x1 (4628)

Dead hard drives are even less interesting on mobiles (except low hanging ones...). We must have a mirror finish on our hard drives so we can use them when they die

I've found that floppies fly quite well.
