719878 2008-11-13 08:19:00 I think your answers are going to be very helpful for people looking for a Laptop :waughh:

Another thing I learnt today was just how much you can safely twist the screens on the HP's and Toshiba without damaging them. I had been somewhat concerned as I had read on forums of cracked screens not being covered by warranties. I thought I was going to have to be extra careful of these skinny little screens.

Actually today I nearly bought this

A Lenovo Thinkpad sp500
T9400 2.53GHz
4GB Ram
250GB HDD with park on movement feature.
Nvidia 9300m Discrete Graphics
15.4 WXGA+ Screen with Anti Glare
DVD Recorder WiFi Bluetooth etc

$1686! How does that sound!

But now I'm not so sure....

I guess the thing I've learnt from my (what I consider) quite extensive research and what I would advise others is that..

ANY make can have hardware that can and does go wrong.

Some brands do have a somewhat better reputation than others such as
Asus and Toshiba and maybe to a lesser extent Lenovo (still not sure on that one. Might wait for more feedback).

The business laptops are often, but not always, built more solidly.

That it would appear handling errors make up a large amount of repairs on
laptops not built to take the physical abuse given to them by some consumers.

Steer clear of the one or two makes with the most complaints then....

Choose one that suits your needs in regards to speed and features and....

Treat it with kid gloves.
You wouldn't clatter your new TV down on the table, neither should you with your computer. Don't treat it like a kitchen appliance.
In other words, if you look after it, it'll likely look after you, as many who own the 'I'd never ever touch xxxx brand' have testified.

Now about the Lenovo, or should I go HP, Mmm thinks

719879 2008-11-13 08:42:00 That Lenovo does look tempting-very fast for a laptop and GFX are pretty good.
Kirsten's College actually use lenovo's and my friend goes there, they have great build quality-so I reckon-if schools can use it and give it to students-it probably is very reliable and is durable

Or cheap and easily replaceable :p

My work (a high school) uses HPs - very nice, reliable machines. HP's business laptops are much better than their consumer laptops IMO. They feel much more solid and more well-built. The same can't be said for their consumer desktops and laptops though :(

719883 2008-11-13 11:10:00 I notice that the Asus and Toshiba have this "Headphone-out jack (S/PDIF)"

Does that mean that if you have the right software, PowerDVD for instance, 5.1 AC3 sound could be output to a receiver through it, (which is what I think of when someone mentions a S/PDIF). Or is it limited to stereo or some sort of matrix-ed fore headphones only?

719885 2008-11-13 20:21:00 Aha... pity about that. I suspected as such. Would have been a useful output if it did normal 5.1 out.

Thanks
