501603 2006-11-26 23:48:00 Im curious as to why people like pctek think that as soon as you say P2P you ONLY download cracked software, movies, albums etc; and are therefore a pirate.
Last month I downloaded the entire series of CSI Series 6 (I missed it due to working nights) which was 4.3 GB iirc... does that make me a pirate too?

If I get my ISP issues taken care of soon, I will download series 7, then I might get the latest series that just showed in NZ of Monster Garage, and a few other programmes (Scrapheap Challenge, Top Gear. & one or 2 others)... all these for my own viewing and all missed due to working nights... oh bad me, I must be a pirate :p
Well, those kind of people are those who thinks they're 'cool' to be in the 'anti-piracy squad'. Wannabees....
I bet you, pctek, have songs that have been downloaded without any pay to the artists...don't deny that.

technically yes that is piracy - you should go buy the series on dvd, and by avoiding that you are pirating their show - sure it costs about $30 an episode, but that's no excuse

even taping a movie on tv so you can watch it again in the future is illegal:annoyed:

but yeah, there is plenty of shareware/spyware/non-protected media out there on p2p networks like pure pwnage (www.purepwnage.com), red vs blue, firefox etc

I know Firefly (the series for the movie Serenity) was released on DVD, didnt realise other series were as well.
Movies, music videos, and albums I know were illegal to copy, just didnt realise the same applied to episodes

'free to air tv' just means we dont pay for it, the advertisers do (which is why sky has 'less' ads) . . . . . tvnz/tv3/prime/triangle etc still have to pay big bucks for the rights to air those shows/movies/music videos and that's why tv advertising costs so much, and why there's so much of it . by taping a show you are infact stealing it, just like copying a music cd - it doesnt matter if you sell it, but selling is worse

back in the days of cassette tapes did anyone record the radio to make their own mix tapes? illegal too:thumbs:

ever convert music (that you legall bought on cd) to mp3 format to put on your mp3 player? YOU PIRATE:thumbs:

that was the excuse sony made for selling cds that locked pc cdrom drives:yuck:, but they got sued cus they didnt warn people it would do this

so from now on, when you copy your music from cd to ipod, just think of those poor musicians which will have to wait that extra 0 . 5 seconds to be able to afford that ferrarri they've been wanting, all because you dont want to pay twice for the same thing just in a different format:groan:

Actually you may be surprised to know I couldn't care less about songs. Never downloaded one in my life.
I have less than half a dozen music CDs I bought years ago and thats the only music on my PC at all.
I don't even own a stereo.

Nor do I care about movies.

I won't deny I have never owned a game that wasn't legit but these days I prefer to buy the few I get from Zest. Cheap enough......Or on rare occasions, like FEAR, I bought that here in NZ because I was too impatient to wait for Zest.

You grow out of it you know.
Did you know for instance the owner of Gameplanet used to be a naughty pirate and had a bulletin board devoted to Commodore Piracy?

He grew up too and now sells legit games.

501609 2007-09-25 02:54:00 Downloading music/movies/software is illegal. I agree.

BUT I don't agree that downloading TV shows is, because - I don't pay to watch them on TV and neither do I buy anything from the ads that come with them.

TV3 or whoever still gets money from the fact that the ads are on there - no matter if anyone watches them or not, and TV3 don't know if I'm watching the show/ads or not!

501610 2007-09-25 03:09:00 There are legal materials that can be downloaded via torrents and other P2P networks. I personally find it a great way to download Linux, nothing beats downloading an entire CD in under an hour.

It cant be long until the likes of Sky offer a purely on demand service. One of the best things about downloading TV episodes is the ability to watch it when it suits me.

Wait, you disagree that it's illegal, or that it's immoral?

The price paid for advertising varies depending on how popular the show or whatever is. If no one watches it, the value of advertising slots in that show goes down.

I totally agree with this. And also the fact that you don't have to avoid stumbling across spoilers as the show would have aired in the US or wherever ages before hand.

Technically it's illegal. but since I can watch it FOR FREE on tv, which is exactly the same as if I download it. then it makes no sense

But my point is that they don't know if I'm watching it or not. I might be watching, I might not, I might be downloading it, I might be taping it from their broadcast and fast forwarding past the advertising!
