Robbyp might be onto something with calling my isp and getting authentication from xtra first, i have tried using the "authentication" selection in Outlook and Thunderbird but it didnt help

There is a webpage somewhere on the xtra website, that shows how to authenticate a domain based email address with telecom. I think you have to do it in the Yahoo Xtra bubble webmail thing. However if you phone vodafone or telecom they should be able to help you, as they both should be familar with the issue.

719303 2008-11-11 03:15:00 Thanks but does this not only apply if you are using a non xtra email address with Xtra mail settings?

My computer is currently connected to Xtra and my POP settings are pop.ihug.co.nz and SMTP settings are smtp.ihug.co.nz and I am sending and receiving emails with no problem. (And I haven't been through the authentication process as it is not my Xtra a/c).

It is just on another Xtra connection that I am having problems sending (but not receiving)??

My computer is currently connected to Xtra and my POP settings are pop . ihug . co . nz and SMTP settings are smtp . ihug . co . nz and I am sending and receiving emails with no problem . (And I haven't been through the authentication process as it is not my Xtra a/c) .

In that case it would be a vodafone problem . I didn't think ISPs allowed you to send out via their SMTP server, if you weren't connected to them via their ISP . eg . XTra won't let you send out email via smtp . xtra . co . nz, if you are connected to xnet, and vice versa .

719305 2008-11-11 03:55:00 If ISP's didn't allow you to send via their SMTP server if you weren't connected to them, then surely that would mean everyone with a laptop say would have to change their SMTP settings everytime they changed ISP when connecting at a new location.

My SMTP settings have always been smtp.ihug.co.nz and I have had no problems connecting to many different ISP's both here and overseas. Xtra is ironically the only one in that I have encountered problems with worldwide because of this Port 25 filtering thing but I eventaully found out how to get around that.

719306 2008-11-11 03:55:00 I've found every ISP works fine except Telecom and Vodafone. :groan:

Sending from Telecom SMTP server seems to work if you select to use SSL and port 465. And if that doesn't work leave it all as defaults. If that still doesn't work, get a bigger hammer. And take to the nearest Telecom helpdesk monkey you can find.

That is correct, and that is what many people have to do (especially if you are with telecom). Unless you have a domain host that provides authenticated SMTP for sending out emails. My web host provider does provide an SMTP server, so I can use that instead of my ISP, which avoids lots of problems. The good hosts do provide SMTP

Correct that is what you have to do. Otherwise spammers could send out from any ISPs SMTP server. Any ISP who allow this would be blacked listed very quickly for running an open server.

The only way around this is to setup secure SMTP on the outgoing mail server of the ISP you are receiving mail from. You then login with your username and password to send mail and your ISP will allow this even though your connection is not with them as they know you are their customer.

719309 2008-11-11 04:53:00 OK thanks robbyp and safari, that makes sense and I do indeed have secure authenticated SMTP for sending out emails (via ihug/vodafone) and that is what I have been using.

My problem then is that one location I often connect to (Xtra) has suddenly stopped working out of the blue. My email continues to work on other Xtra (and various other) ISP connections without problems. I can't work out why this one has stopped working all of a sudden, although there was a power cut recently and I wonder if this could have reset anything either with Xtra or the router. Internet and everything else is operating fine, just not sending emails...?
