501456 2006-11-23 09:05:00 I would use a USB flash drive before a floppy disc.
You can pick up a 2GB one for about $100 now.

501457 2006-11-23 09:21:00 Its not the DVD's fault that it did that ;), is an end user problem ;) :)In technical circles (and even HelpDesks :D ) this is known as a PEBKAC - Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair :D johcar (6283)

or you could but a cheap 200gb hdd for that... somewhat more economical

Dead hard drives are even less interesting on mobiles (except low hanging ones...). We must have a mirror finish on our hard drives so we can use them when they die

those platters inside make for good windchimes, and they've got a perfect mirror fininsh:D

501459 2006-11-26 01:34:00 But Jack, you never had a backup. You had one DVD containing a lot if files.

One disk is no a backup. If you have three disks, kept in separate places (and you have checked that they are readable), that's a backup.

To me it is.

501461 2006-11-26 01:41:00 Jack, "adding" files to the only copy is always dangerous. Things can go wrong. That's why people who have to have backups, don't have only one copy. :D Graham L (2)
501462 2006-11-26 02:13:00 for backup ALWAYS use CDR or DVDR ................not ......rw

why oh why do people use 'formattable' (wipeable) media for important backups ?........as for floppies they're well known to simply selfdestruct.......

The obvious answer is so they can be updated. That is my reason anyway

501464 2006-11-26 08:24:00 At around about $1/disk for CDR-DVDR I can't see what the problem is, just use a new one each time and eventually throw the older ones away or use them for coasters.

They now cost less than a packet of peanuts.
