500831 2006-11-21 20:52:00 Since im not old enough to own a road motorcycle - im going to post a picture of my '98 Suzuki DR 250 - it honestly scares me sometimes when you open her up  nothing like screaming along a loose gravel track at 75KM\H at full opposite lock trying to keep the rear end from sliding out :D

The BSA Gold Star 500 (www.pbase.com) was a nice enough bike, but like all Beezers, it leaked badly.

/QUOTE]

Oh come on - the BSA was like all British bikes of the era - leaked badly my foot, it leaked extremely well

500833 2006-11-21 21:38:00 It can be argued that the Death Knell of the British bike was in fact initiated by Edward Turner and his 1937 Triumph Speed Twin.
From then on, accepting the problems of WWII, design atrophied, the British bike designer just could not think past the parallel twin, and push rod OHV engines, neither was he allowed to by atrophied management.

It was not even a good mechanical design, balance was shocking, which they tried to alleviate by rubber mounting. Frame design and handling were poor, due to lack of rigidity.

The only two innovative designs that appeared after the war that I can think of was the Vincent V Twin, and the Norton Featherbed frame, but then Nortons didn't have a decent 'modern' engine to put in it.

Edit: I well remember my old mate Tom Somerton, Vincent builder extraordinaire, just after he bought Pete Darvill's "Norvin" the first such beast, Vincent engine in Norton frame, came hurtling past the VOC club meeting place at The Phantom Coach on the Coventry by-pass, in a blurr. Hell what was that everyone said.

"What speed were you going at Tom?"

"Oh, 140mph on the clock"

That's 225km/hour for those that dont know MPH :).

Not bad for a 1945 design.

500836 2006-11-21 22:18:00 I also "had" a Husqvarna 400WR ( . off-road . com/dirtbike/article/articleDetail . jsp?id=331945" target="_blank">dirtbike . off-road . com) for a while . . . kinda borrowed it really . . . and I got to use it for a few years while the owner was off in the Peace Corps for the US in Bermuda or Lagos or some other 5th rank country . . . . . it was a nasty bike . . . lots of power and it didn't care what gear you put it in . . . it just shovelled dirt off the back tire with a twist of the throttle .

Very top heavy and tall . The kickstarter could kill an ox and the suspension was "stiff" . . as in it didn't move very much at all . Reminded me of a very light AJS 500 ( . motoclassicevents . com/motoclassicevents/ajs . html" target="_blank">www . motoclassicevents . com) Single or the BSA 441 Victor ( . classicmotorcycles . org . uk/bikemuseum/images/bsa/bsa_1970_b44vs_victor_441cc . jpg" target="_blank">www . classicmotorcycles . org . uk), (this one shows an electric horn, which mine did not have . . . mine had a Bombay horn with a squeeze bulb to make it honk), which I also had access to whenever I wanted to treat myself badly . :dogeye:

I got to drive one of the very early Ariel Squarefours ( . google . com/imgres?imgurl=http://dspace . dial . pipex . com/tevward/bikesheds/classic/square4-1955 . jpg&imgrefurl=http://dspace . dial . pipex . com/tevward/bikesheds/classic/square4 . htm&h=504&w=650&sz=93&hl=en&sig2=14-e8rQN3hrxvw2MqJa_gg&start=35&tbnid=ZQ2l5Ouv7LDE9M:&tbnh=106&tbnw=137&ei=PHhjRer4HbGCJbf57PME&prev=/images%3Fq%3DAriel%2BSquare%2Bfour%26start%3D20%26" target="_blank">images . google . com ndsp%3D20%26svnum%3D50%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26safe%3D off%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dorg . mozilla:en-US:official_s%26sa%3DN) that didn't have the counter-rotating crankshafts like latter models; it would rise up in the rear wheel if you hit the throttle while it was sitting on the center stand .

The torque was astronomical for it's day . . . and the long stroke [engine pix here ( . arielnorthamerica . org/history/cammyengine1 . jpg" target="_blank">www . arielnorthamerica . org)] (al'a Brit bikes and cars) made the red line around 3,000 RPM . After that, the pistons entered the twilight zone and exceeded their modulus of elasticity and broke .

It also had a total-loss oil system . . . in that it didn't leak . . . it was made to dump the oil from the rocker arms on the ground . :groan:

500837 2006-11-21 23:11:00 The Square Four I had, looked just like that, was a pig . Handling piss-poor, excuse the french, no brakes, no guts, Solex carbs that seemed to affect the engine warm up time, a split primary chain case cover that was had to mate simultaneously in two planes which was a dangerous leakage problem, an inaccessible battery, and I seem to remember something horrible about the oil filter, maybe it didn't have one . Top speed about 90 mph if you were lucky .

If you think the Square Four had torque, then you should have tried a Vinny :) :)

Just no comparison at all with the Vincent, not even with the bog standard Rapide, let alone the Shadow .

The Vincent was actually capable of revving to 8000rpm, but not with the standard needle roller big end, a caged roller with 3/16" rollers had to be fitted,, in fact the bits for a Velocette could be used in conjunction with a 1 . 5" crankpin .

It was a way of hurling an insult to a Triumph or a Velo to overtake at 90mph in second gear and then change up through 2 gears as you went by !

Many of the 1/4 mile sprinters just used 1st and second gears .

500838 2006-11-21 23:31:00 Those "ape hanger" type bars are mostly illegal here..they must not be higher than the shoulder of the rider when they are seated on the bike...but that isn't strictly enforced.

Do you get Gary Bang HD parts there in NZ?

Whenu...your posted pix didn't make it...I tried a few times to see it......

Those bars are probally illegal here as well, Cant say I ever asked, Dont even have a bike lisence.

Muhahahahaha.

Never heard of Gary Bang but I never go into HD dealerships, Hate em. Much rather talk to a mechanic then a salesperson.

as for the pic posted by Whenu, he muffed the link.here it is.
