719784 2008-11-12 10:06:00 Hi

Friend's computer got hit with heaps of virus, etc. After installing Avast, SuperAntiSpywear, Advanced System Care, Panda Rootkit Remover and just for good measure, Malware Bytes, I finally got rid of them. All programs are now showing a clean system.

However, two problems remain. The first one is the computer won't keep the DNS settings. You can manually key them in and then connect to the internet. No hassles, but restart the computer and the settings disappear. This means you have to manually key them in to get on the net again.

The second problem is when selecting the C:/. Double left click on the icon and the Search Box appears. How do I get it to Explore the C:/ like it should?

Thanks in advance for your help.

719785 2008-11-12 10:15:00 The virus corrupted a few registry values and thats probably why it isn't doing what it should.

This should fix it, type "regsvr32 /i shell32.dll" into cmd or run.

As for the dns settings, is there a firewall installed on the machine?

I recently had problems with XP not remembering any of the internet and DHCP settings and found out it was a conflict with McAfee Firewall.

Uninstalling it solved the problem.

Cheers

Thanks for your help. Only firewall installed is the XP one. Turning this off has no effect on the DNS Settings

Hi there. My Computer > Tools > Folder Options. Click "File Types" tab, then click "File Folder" or "Folder" (give both a try). Click "Advanced", then select "explore" as the default option. A screenie here for you:

719788 2008-11-12 18:38:00 There is no need normally to add the DNS manually
Set DHCP on in the modem and leave Obtain DNS automatically selected in your connection settings.
Safari (3993)
719789 2008-11-12 19:00:00 That depends

If you use a router and it supports portforwarding, and you want to use it, more often than not, you have to type the ips in manually (in Windows anyway)

Or portforwarding wont work. I found out myself, that having it on auto (in Windows), it doesnt work

Which is why I had to type the ips in manually
