720378 2008-11-15 08:58:00 Today while surfing youtube, with multiple tabs open in firefox my trusty desktop AMD Athlon Xp 2500+ system suddenly powered off and rebooted. It got as far as starting to load windows when it rebooted again.

It loaded again and when XP gave me the option to boot into safe mode, once I selected this and Windows began to load, it rebooted again.

I have a fairly recently new Enermax PSU (which I brought after reading many positive reviews on PressF1) so I was guessing it was a power issue.

It was a super hot day today, so I assumed that maybe the CPU had gotten too hot and the computer was trying to shut down. I powered down the machine, took the side off and let it cool for about an hour. I then cleaned the dust from the heatsink and fan (which was pretty dirty) and powered on again.

The system is not running fine again. I installed Speedfan which shows the CPU at 47C degrees, I also ran HWMonitor which shows the same temp. I checked my BIOS and the shutdown temp was set to 57C. Is this set a little low?

And if the pc was trying to shut down to protect the CPU, shouldn't it stay powered down instead of rebooting?

Does Windows (XP Home) keep a log or record of such events that I could check?

I have never removed the CPU from the motherboard since I bought the machine new 5 or so years ago, would a reapplication of thermal paste help?

As always, cheers for any help in advance.

720379 2008-11-15 09:10:00 I would set the shutdown temp to about 70C.

A machine will shut down (not reboot) if it gets too hot - if a machine simply reboots it won't help it cool down at all :)
