720152 2008-11-14 02:53:00 I have a fairly new PC with Windows Vista installed. When I first got it the resolution was set too low for my Viewsonic VA1926w LCD monitor and the screen was stretched horizontally. My repeated attempts to fix this failed, except for once for about 30 seconds. I got the company who sold me the computer to look at the system and they managed to get the correct resolution of 1440 x 900. It stayed this way for a couple of months and then suddenly, of it's own volition, decided to shrink back down to 1024 x 768. The computer company has got me to delete and reinstall drivers and then worked on the computer themselves, but with no luck. They blame Vista. Are they right?

I did notice that while the resolution was correct that, whenever I'd leave the computer on (but monitor turned off) for any extended length of time, when I came back the maximised windows were still maximised, but had shrunk. The only way that I could get them back to full 'maximised' size, was to 'restore down' and then maximise again.

Should I forgo Vista and go back to XP, or do you think this is a problem caused by something else?

Thanks in advance

:) Sereena

720153 2008-11-14 02:58:00 Have you got Vista SP1 installed?

Also, when you try and change the resolution back to 1440*900, what happens?

720154 2008-11-14 03:14:00 Yes, it is SP1. The highest resolution the computer will let me increase it to is 1024 x 768. Sereena (3678)
720155 2008-11-14 03:16:00 Whats the brand/model of the PC/motherboard if it's a white box PC? Have you had a look on the manufacturers site for a newer driver?

Also try setting the monitor back to it's factory settings (somewhere in the monitor menu).

720156 2008-11-14 03:24:00 it aint vista... its possibly a bad monitor or the drivers do not match the video card for vista...
never rule out bad hardware... it does happen

720157 2008-11-14 03:28:00 It's a Compucon AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 6000+ 3.00 GHz and 2 GB Ram. Any help? We're getting to the limits of my knowledge here. ;-)

I would hope the guy I bought it from would have tried setting the monitor back to the factory settings, but in case he hasn't, where would I find them?

720158 2008-11-14 03:45:00 Is Aero working? Is it a brand name PC (eg Dell, HP, Acer etc)? jwil1 (65)
720159 2008-11-14 03:55:00 Aero's working. It only stopped once when I had deleted a display driver and before Windows had automatically downloaded it again.

The PC's a Compucon.

Find out what graphic card you have and download the drivers from the manufacturers web site. Is this onboard graphics or have you an AGP or PCI-e card?

Probably the Windows driver is at fault.

720161 2008-11-14 08:58:00 From the original quote: Compucon Thunderbird Workstation, AMD Athlon DC 6000+ AM2 Processor, 2 GB Dual Channel ram, 2x 160gb Hard Disks, DVD RW Drive, Integrated Quadro NVS210S video card with DVI, HD Sound & Gigabit Networking on board...

So I assume I'm looking for the drivers for the Quadro NVS210S video card?
