| 720012 | 2008-11-13 05:52:00 | Hey guys My friend has a G5 which unfortunately keeps locking up on him. Hes not too computer savy so I said Id try and help him resolve this issue before he went to get it checked out by the Mac people. Baically, since he installed the 'tiger' operating system, his Mac has been freezing up on him (sometimes once per day or two, sometimes a few times per day). It comes up with an error message displayed in a window in the middle of the screen, saying his computer has encountered a problem and needs to restart (or something similar). I only have experience with PC's, and I initially wondered if this could be a memory issue. We pulled some ram out of his other G5 (not running 'tiger' OS) but the problem still persists. Any help on this problem would be greatly appreciated, as my friend has quite a workload to get through each week (he is a video editor). Thanks PS. Below is the error information ------------------------------------------- Problem details Thu Oct 23 17:00:09 2008 panic(cpu 1 caller 0x003682D8): "OSObject::_RESERVEDOSObject14 called\n"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-1228.5.20/libkern/c++/OSMetaClass.cpp:816 Latest stack backtrace for cpu 1: Backtrace: 0x0009B498 0x0009BE3C 0x00029DD8 0x003682D8 0x00362EC4 0x005C2070 0x005C332C 0x005C3674 0x00118E20 0x000DE458 0x0010B6E0 0x000E3AAC 0x000E4788 0x00252BBC 0x0010AEC0 0x002E944C 0x0008BB58 0x0008BC2C 0x000655F4 0x00067324 0x000AF9C4 0x000B2A78 Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies): com.apple.iokit.IOStorageFamily(1.5.2)@0x5ae000->0x5cefff Proceeding back via exception chain: Exception state (sv=0x28dee000) PC=0x006FC100; MSR=0x4200D030; DAR=0x00000004; DSISR=0x42000000; LR=0x00696ED8; R1=0xF0080A20; XCP=0x00000010 (0x400 - Inst access) BSD process name corresponding to current thread: JavaApplicationS Mac OS version: 9E17 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 9.4.0: Mon Jun 9 19:36:17 PDT 2008; root:xnu-1228.5.20~1/RELEASE_PPC System model name: PowerMac11,2 System Configuration Model: PowerMac11,2, BootROM 5.2.7f1, 2 processors, PowerPC G5 (1.1), 2.3 GHz, 1 GB Graphics: kHW_NVidiaGeForce6600Item, GeForce 6600, spdisplays_pcie_device, 256 MB Memory Module: DIMM0/J6700, 512 MB, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200U-444 Memory Module: DIMM1/J6800, 512 MB, DDR2 SDRAM, PC2-4200U-444 Network Service: Ethernet 1, Ethernet, en0 PCI Card: GeForce 6600, display, SLOT-1 PCI Card: Apple 5714, network, GIGE PCI Card: Apple 5714, network, GIGE Serial ATA Device: ST3320620AS, 298.09 GB Serial ATA Device: WDC WD2500JS-41MVB1, 232.89 GB Parallel ATA Device: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B USB Device: Hub in Apple Extended USB Keyboard, Mitsumi Electric, full_speed, 500 mA USB Device: Apple Extended USB Keyboard, Mitsumi Electric, full_speed, 250 mA USB Device: My Book, Western Digital, high_speed, 500 mA USB Device: USB Receiver, Logitech, low_speed, 500 mA FireWire Device: unknown_device, unknown_value, unknown_speed Hardware Model Name: Power Mac G5 Model Identifier: PowerMac11,2 Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (1.1) Processor Speed: 2.3 GHz Number Of CPUs: 2 L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB Memory: 1 GB Bus Speed: 1.15 GHz Boot ROM Version: 5.2.7f1 Serial Number: YM5412J0R6V Operating System System Version: Mac OS X 10.5.4 (9E17) |

| 720013 | 2008-11-13 06:55:00 | If he has OS X 10.5 it is Leopard not Tiger. Did he upgrade to 10.5 from a previous version. It could be a bad install or the way it was done. A kernel panic can be caused by damaged or incompatible 3rd party software There are several install options basic Upgrade, Archive and Install, and Erase and Install. Have a look at this link to avoid issues with updating software. www.macfixit.com |
