719989 2008-11-13 04:17:00 I have connected a wireless router, put in a password etc, can access it via laptop as expected, now I would like to know how I know it is secure and the neighbours can't access it. It says it is now encrypted, and daughter and I both had to input the password to access the net. supergran (108)

719991 2008-11-13 04:30:00 Yes-your neighbours cannot connect to your network UNLESS they know how to hack into networks.
It'll make it harder for them to hack into your network if you have a WPA network instead of a WEP network, you can check this on the routers page (usually 192.168.0.1 or something similar-check your manual)
But chances are, the connection will be so weak even if they do manage to connect to your network the internet will be too slow to be usable.
Also-make sure your password/key is very secure i.e randomly computer generated-not a word.

Cheers:thumbs:

719992 2008-11-13 04:34:00 As long as you used WPA or preferably WPA2 with a strong password (at least 8 characters with uper and lower case letters plus numbers and symbols) then you should be fine.
WEP and even WPA with a weak password are pretty easy to crack for someone who knows what they are doing.

719994 2008-11-13 09:51:00 Thanks everyone, yes it is WPA and over 8 letters and numbers long. I am so glad that I did it right, thanks for answering. supergran (108)
719995 2008-11-13 20:58:00 The best way to check your wireless security is to have a laptop not on your network, eg a friend's, to try and connect with their wireless. FoxyMX (5)

Our neighbour is a motel with an unsecured Hotspot and it is sooo sloooow due to a weak signal
Just not worth the hassle
