502622 2006-11-27 21:39:00 I like making mistakes - well I must do seeing how many I make. But some years ago I made a beauty. Bought a house with a magnificent garden. Lovely I thought - I am a lousy gardener (OK with veges!). Now I find the lovely garden needs maintaining, it needs knowledge I don't have. So I need a good gardening site to help me - but I must be able to send photos there for people to tell me if its a weed or chrysanthemum or something. (My wife has banned me from weeding!).
I have loads of books on plants etc and can follow instructions - but only if I know what the darn thing is.
Any suggestions welcomed.

Rule 1: If you hate it and don't want it there - its a weed.
If you like it - its a wanted plant. (A weed is just an unwanted plant).

Keep your lawn clippings - apart from compost for the vege garden it makes excellent mulch. Helps keep the weeds under control and breaks down to help the soil - which helps make it easier to weed.

I had an overgrown mess here too. 2 parts we put back into lawn, the rest got a major pruning and masses of stuff ripped out, mowed and composted. And 3 trips to the tip as well for the ivy, holly and pest vine.

As for the rest I follow the rule above. Some of my neighbours were quite horrified but like I said, if you hate it - its a weed.

502626 2006-11-28 01:17:00 And it's easy to tell the difference between weeds and valuable plants: if you're weeding and you pull on what looks like a weed and it comes out of the ground easily, it's a valuable plant! johcar (6283)
502627 2006-11-28 01:39:00 Iggy Johcar . . .

If it has short roots and a larger upper growth, likely it's a weed . . . they don't go deep because they are just trying to live long enough to propagate then die .

Most things you want and have planted on purpose will estabish deeper roots, not as a rule but as a tendency . There are some exceptions .

Nope, if it looks like a weed its is a weed regardless of how much they cost in garden shops.

I have this stuff called alstroemeria - it sells for $6 a tiny little lump. It has pretty flowers and the florists love it apparently.

Its a weed.
I'm still ripping out infestations of the stuff.
As well as Irises, Peonies and other weeds.

Yeah Thanks Greg.
But of course I have already tried Google. And tried again just now. I seem able to find lots of sites but being able to send them photos for somebody to look at doesn't seem possible - not to me anyway. Funny enough I found one site that looked as though it might be right, then a member wrote in asking was it possible to send photos in as she could find no way to do it. There were no replies. Perhaps I am asking for something that doesn't exist yet.

502630 2006-11-28 09:32:00 Thomas mate. All you need to do to "send" a photo is to upload it to the likes of imagef1.net.nz and post the link to the forum you're asking in. Example... Here (www.imagef1.net.nz). Greg (193)
502631 2006-11-28 09:46:00 A weed is ANY plant in the wrong place .

For mistakes, don't try this . For several months, I have saved all the stray hairs from my wife that happen in hair brushes etc . Yesterday morning I put half the hair on the hair brush and half on the pillow while she was having a shower . When she saw it . . . ! ! !

Well, I thought it was funny, but that was not the universal opinion 'round here . Hot tongue and cold shoulder diet for a moment or three .
