TomWell we're not green fingers by any stretch, but missus is fairly sure it's some type of camellia.

502654 2006-12-03 04:57:00 Its not a camelia looks to me more like a banksia rose....( not all rose's have thorns) ..... are you sure its a tree? or is a climber? camelias dont flower with multiple stems on a flower bunch, they each have there own branch - one flower each spot.

can you post a pic of the whole tree?

whats the trunk of it like? multiples? or a singular?

502656 2006-12-03 05:07:00 Around here, until recently a peacock did the job, but a dog would have been quieter .

We had 4 peacocks when I first married my wife . . . 3 were blue and 1 was white .

There was Pete, Re-Pete, Bad-Pete and Ana-Pete . . . the last was the albino or white one .

They spent most of the day screaming and trying to eat the chrome off the bumpers of my cars .

Ever step in their waste? . . . black super glue!!!

I got that last one from Moosey's Country Garden (www.mooseyscountrygarden.com) in your neck of the world....so I know there are varieties of Magnolias there too.

502660 2006-12-03 05:26:00 I'm with beetle here, Thomas.

I've never had a banksia rose, so no expert on them, but can confirm it's neither a camellia or magnolia.

Edit: Answers to beetle's questions will help.

We do indeed grow magnolias here, Joe.
My neighbour across the road has a beautiful one I get the benefit of each spring (and NZ's Jury family are world-famous breeders of new varieties).

But Thomas's pic just ain't a magnolia.
