| 720265 | 2008-11-16 07:18:00 | The problem with Ghost 2003 and SATA drives, according to this site: www.neilslade.com is the virtual partition used to create the DOS environment when you run Ghost from Windows. He says: "A) Ghost 2003 is virtually useless with SATA drives INCLUDING having a SATA CD-RW plugged in- it crashes the system, and then you can't reboot because Ghost makes a Virtual Partition on your original IDE drive, and the VP partition which becomes the new "active" drive--- and it won't work because you've got one or more SATA drives connected....a hopeless dead end. " Hmm, 2002 works ok and I do have a SATA DVD drive too. Here is what Symantec say: service1.symantec.com "When you start the cloning operation from within Windows, Ghost automatically restarts your computer into a DOS environment, performs the cloning operation, and then restarts the computer into Windows. Ghost uses a Ghost Virtual Partition to create the DOS environment. The Ghost Virtual Partition is a file stored on the hard disk. When Ghost restarts the computer, the computer uses the information from that file to load DOS and other required files, and to run Ghost.exe." Ghost 2002 only runs from a DOS boot disk and there is no virtual partition, presumably that is why 2002 works with SATA but not 2003. Neil Slade says ditch Ghost 2003 and use Acronis instead if you have SATA drives. Otherwise you could beg borrow or steal Ghost 2002 :) It would still pay to make a bootable floppy or CD with Ghost installed and run Ghost from that and see what happens. |

| 720267 | 2008-11-18 07:31:00 | I have used Ghost 2003 on several PC's with Sata drives, no problem. However Xp is the end of the line for it. I had to upgrade to Ghost 12 for Vista. there is an even later version now. however Acronis 2009 has more features. | jtester (9712) | ||
