If you want to do this with say camera flashes wirelessly, you will need the camera manufacturer flashes I think, the builtin flash gives a small flash and it the other flashes (preset prior) has a builtin reciever so they fire as appropriately... Such as builtin flash on camera, 1 for the back, one on the side and one on the front of the model. In other words you need 3-4 flashes and each is like $200-300US.

If you have a real basic camera (like the entry level digital SLR) the builtin flash may not have a trigger mode so you need to add that (4th) flash on top of your camera to act as the trigger or you can get some sensor thingy that is not a flash but just a trigger somewhat cheaper I think but not by much and its just a trigger without any flash capability.

For portraits its a fast f.2.8 mid lens and a long lens like a 28-70 f.2.8 and a 70-200 f.2.8, each priced around $1500US or around $2500NZ in here. Long lenses blur better the background, for a mid lens you do want low f number becos a mid lens not blur as much, the back goes blur and what is in focus is the model. But b/c you are doing formal shooting, you can get away with cheaper and better but more awkward non zoom lenses which has this low f number.

502797 2006-11-29 22:29:00 If ya in the USA the cheapest and safest option is really the following, sometimes I get my gear there too. Remember things can be international warranty but for digital cameras its just domestic, so buying in USA its USA warranty only unless you gonna pay for freight to USA and back home.

www.bhphotovideo.com I use them, also pro's use them as well. They have prices and all kind of stuff and freight costs as well. If you want a 6MP digital SLR or a pocket digital or a medium format 40MP camera or a sheet film camera with the cloth over your head. They have it. Or if you want a 44 inch wide printer they have that too or any studio ilghts or what not...

502798 2006-12-09 09:22:00 I will PM you with this if you don't receive it in case.

From your equipment it looks like you have a dirt cheap lens that is not even Minolta brand or even a respected 3rd party brand like Sigma, Tokina or Tamron. So hopefully your desired work is not out of wack. If you are doing studio or on location shoots with as much time as you please.

Consider a Canon or a Nikon or a Pentax or the Sony I guess. I think the Pentax and Nikon is a bit cheaper thou. Get a Canon 350D or a Nikon D40. Then get a non zoom lens like a 50mm f.1.8 for $100US or less and/or a 85mm f1.8 at around $350US or less. For the lightning, use your studio lights you have now and link then via a hotshoe attachment (wired) or wireless with a unit on hotshoe and a unit at the flashes so they can communicate. Certainly under $1000US or even in NZD.

If you are having time pressures, so they dictate your time, ie., fashion shoots like catwalks or red carpets. Its gets more expensive, unless you have work approach and can get your angle and position right. If not, the equipment is more expensive Canon 30D or Nikon D200 and 2 expensive zoom lenses. Use your current lighting equip., and for on location use a up to date external flash since it will have TTL, the digital camera would not work compatible with your film external flash. You get semi auto or fully manual which will be too hard for action styles. You may even want 2 flashes on each of (2) the same camera's so to limit lense swappings to save time, the models are going to come down and they are not going to wait for you. To reduce the flash refreshing or recharging, you may want to get a power unit that clips on your belt clip. This would be a iconic setup for the journalist, wedding or fashion photog.

If you want to get used equip or more info about others use dpreview.com and photo.net. You can also consider some 2nd hand bodies and lenses. I am only aware of Nikon products fully, they all take hotshoes but if you must insist on a sync port I think its the D1 and D2 series and D100 with base unit optional part. D200 does it as new now and the D2 series.

The Pentax and Sony limitation is that they tend to only have one or two dSLRs to choose from and "all" from the entry level so restricted if you want to grow up in future. But they both I think have image stabiliser built into the body, Nikon and Canon does not have it in the body. Nikon D40 at $500US with a kit lens, add a 50mm at $100 and or a $350 85mm, its still within budget. AFAIK Nikon body is less than Canon and the Sony, but not sure on the Pentax. The D40 is a good price breaker. While it is 6MP many have been using it for wedding work and printed A3 if not larger and for journalist you can get away with 3 megapixels easily. They normally request 2000 pixels horizontal size.

Edit, not sure if Sony or Pentax you can get those $100 or $350 good cheap lenses but Canon and Nikon sure have them at that price. Go and research. That link I provided earlier is prob the best store in reputation and price really if you reside in the USA.

502799 2006-12-09 10:26:00 Nikon D40 does not autofocus with non AFS lenses as it lacks the motor in the body so relies on AFS lenses which has a embedded motor. Solution pick up a D50, may be hard to locate as its being discontinued and replace with D40. All bodies apart from D40 will AF with those lenses. Nomad (952)
