720972 2008-11-17 21:50:00 Have a widowed neighbor who has W98 on a very basic desktop machine.(256 RAM 20GB HDD)Her printerpacked it in recently and she used all her flybuys to get a new Brother DCP-165c only to find it will not work on 98 but must have at least w2000.I have a legit Wxp disk and would like to get her printer working for her.If I put XP on to duel boot and do not activate it could she go in to XP just when she wants to print.?She is only on dialup and hardly goes on the net.I could have put a Linux OS on for her but it appears this printer is not yet supported. kjaada (253)
720973 2008-11-17 21:53:00 Xp would work fine for 30 days, that includes days even when it isn't used :crying
After that it would need to be activated before it would allow you to log in again.

720974 2008-11-17 21:54:00 You'll just have to check if the hardware supports windows XP before you go ahead with the install. Does the PC have USB ports?? GR8Metal (14133)
720975 2008-11-17 21:54:00 While the sentiment behind this is nice your still trying to pirate windows.
Might need to think about that a little.

720976 2008-11-17 22:14:00 I guess windows XP will load it's standard drivers to support the hardware so the install should be fine.... as long as the PC has a USB port!

If there are windows XP drivers for the computers hardware and you are happy using windows XP, then you can buy a legitimate licensed copy of windows XP.

720977 2008-11-17 22:15:00 Just install it and activate it, God won't punish you for robbing MS of a little cash.

720978 2008-11-17 22:33:00 There seem to be a lot of conflicting views here.Could we get a consensus?
I do not want to do Bill out of a few bob but I do want to help someone who has problems
existing from one pension day to the next.I honestly think a linux OS would be the answer but I can not find any support for this printer:
In fact the only thing I got near was a Ubuntu member saying in effect "I give up can someone else take this on"

720979 2008-11-17 22:46:00 You may have to follow what it says here (solutions.brother.com)

For Linux

There's an LPR, and CUPSwrapper driver for that printer (in RPM and DEB format) here (solutions.brother.com)

You are a godsend. That is exactly what we are looking for.

720981 2008-11-17 23:39:00 I wouldn't. 256mb on XP?! That will be fine for the first 5 minutes but once its used a bit it will run like rest - like a crippled snail.

Tell her to take the printer back - Brother are crap anyway - and buy another one - there's still printers out there with Win98 drivers.
