| 720917 | 2008-11-17 20:56:00 | My wife's friend has given me her laptop to fix. She says it can't read her USB flash drive. I fired it up and confirmed the fault, unable to read anything from the USB ports. The device manager lists 4x "unknown devices". There is no issues listed under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. I've downloaded the chipset drivers from Acer's website which hasn't fixed the issue. I downloaded the latest chipset drivers (845G) direct from intel's website but still hasn't fixed the USB "Unknown device" issues. The system is a Celeron 1.7, 768mb RAM with XP Home SP3. The system does report a "bad block" in the system event viewer but I don't think this is related......or is it??? :confused: Another note: Scrolling down the system event viewer, there is a warning message for the "PlugPlayManager" details are "Plug and Play user-interface dialogs have been suppressed in Factory Mode"...??? |

| 720918 | 2008-11-17 21:09:00 | Delete the entries under USB controllers, in device manager, then reboot. Then see what happens If device manager is still showing those 4x unknown devices, delete them as well, then reboot. See if they reappear or disappear |

| 720922 | 2008-11-17 22:32:00 | That Plug and Play user-interface dialogs have been suppressed in Factory Mode error may have something to do with sysprep When the image for this system was done, by the looks of it, it wasnt "resealed" (Did this come with XP, or did someone install XP on it)? And the result, is what you're seeing And it may have something to do with a file called Winbom.ini (this is like a setup config file) You may have to do a system restore, or reinstall Windows to fix it Or if its under warranty, tell the shop that error, and get them to fix it Also, add hardware wizard doesnt work (is this working on that)?? Some sites, say an error appears, saying Cannot run two device installations. You can only install one device at a time. Another device install is underway. When it is finished you can try this wizard again". Or a possible fix is here (forums.techguy.org) I know this thread is old, but I found a solution and am hoping that it will help others. Under the Startup key, I deleted the FactoryPreInstallInProgress"=dword:00000001 I also deleted the entire HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Factory key. Once I completed these and rebooted, I was able to use the Hardware Wizard, the event entries did not show up, and in my case, the USB hard drive that I was attempting to use would mount using plug and play. Or Under HKLM/SYSTEM/Setup change the key "FactoryPreInstallInProgress" to 0 Reboot. The system log msg should have gone and hardware install will work properly. | 720923 | 2008-11-17 22:46:00 | The laptop has a Windows XP Home OEM sticker under the unit so I'm assuming it was supplied with XP home. However, because the unit is a number of years old, I guessing someone has had a "play" with it recently. Probably a friends, neighbours, son's school mate!! Your right, I can't run the add hardware wizard as it displays "cannot run two devices.... etc" error. I'll let her know that I recommend a rebuild as it looks like it was a hand-me down from someone else anyway... Cheers! |
