720444 2008-11-15 22:51:00 Looking at getting a couple of new dvdrw drives one sata and one ide for different computers and I was wondering which one comes with the best software for burning, watching movies.

And yes I allready have some freeware programes for doing this:) but as I am buying new dvdrw drives I would like to get something worth while with them as well to get my money's worth while I am at it.

So what do you think would be good to get?
:thanks

720445 2008-11-15 23:10:00 I used to use Samsung DVD/RW's for ages, then the damn things started having to many failures.

LG - tried a few - To many problems.

Changed to ASUS DVD/RW's--- went Ok for a while, but so far this year I have had 3 fail on my own PC's and another 4-5 on customers PC's :(

SO now I'm working on Benq's -- Fingers crossed, so far out of the 10 I have installed in the last 4 months none have had any problems, and 3 on my own PC's all fine.

As for software - Hmmmmm MOST come with Nero. Personally I dont use it.
I use Ashampoo (www2.ashampoo.com) range of burners for CD/DVD etc. along with a several others for converting etc

For playing Videos I use VLC player or Total Video Player (www.effectmatrix.com) - or Media Player Classic (sourceforge.net) <<-- Dont let the name or looks fool ya! it looks like the old WMP - but it has so many features its amazing.
Also have DVD X player (www.dvd-x-player.com/) & GOM Player (http:) --- me thinks i have to may choices some how  and thats not all of them.

I agree with LG and Samsung. But ASUS? I've installed 100s, no failures at all.
My picks are:

Pioneer
ASUS
Liteon

And with the last 2 its always Nero.
Just use Imgburn.

720448 2008-11-16 21:00:00 Pioneer, Asus (simply rebranded Pioneer drives), NEC and Benq all give good quality burns.

They may not necessarily be the fastest (they aren't slow and you aren't going to miss a few minutes) but their burns are of high quality. They also do extra things like over burning, modifying book type etc.

720449 2008-11-16 21:41:00 Yeah, IMO Asus/Pioneer (both made by Pioneer) are the best on the market. We've sold hundreds of them and I think have had one fail in the year 1/2 (ish) we've been selling them.

I have a LiteOn drive in my PC which is about 4 years old now (drive not the PC - LOL). That cost a pretty penny when I first bought it, but it hasn't missed a beat.

BenQ seem to be reasonably solid.

LG, AOpen and Samsung seem to fail far too often.

Havn't seen enough Sony drives to know if theyre any good, anyone know who makes them (if not sony)?

I think Lite-on used to make them. But now they are produced by a Sony-NEC joint venture. So -NOW- they are as good as the best.

I have an NEC 4551 (had to get it imported from Europe since it wasn't available in NZ). It has exceptional burn quality.

If you've only been selling them for 18 months you wouldn't have sold many Asus drives based on Pioneer. Asus has been using the same chip as Liteon since the 1612.
