When a person first gets broadband, what actually happens at the telephone exchange? :confused: Does the Telecom contractor install something like a router or is it just a matter or switching wires so that the person's house can get broadband? 2. Often there are outages, up to several hours :angry (at least this is the case with Slingshot) - and the explanation from the ISP is that they "are resolving issues with Telecom". What really is going on - are fibre optics being installed, or exchanges being upgraded, or what? Are the problems due to the increase in people signing up to broadband and extra [wiring / fibre optics / or whatever] is needed? Hopefully we have some Telecom savvy :D techies :nerd: here on PF1. |

| 503820 | 2006-12-02 21:39:00 | I don't have first hand experience, but I'd imagine that the answer to the first one is simply a matter of switching lines over and plugging them into the DSLAMs, or atleast putting a filter on the line and routing the high frequencies to said device. The answer to the second one is simply that the network is crap and I'm still downloading max at 8kB/s. |

| 503821 | 2006-12-03 06:08:00 | Forms get bounced around various departments, then eventually a contractor from Downer or whicever firm works in your area goes out to the exchange and pulls your wire off at one end, then re-routes it via some more equipment, solders it back on and performs some tests with a alptop to see if it works. Telecom do something with the software at their end before this. When there is a problem at another ISP, they have to spend ages figuring out if it is their end or Telecoms. If Telecoms then they have to convince Telecom that it is their fault, which is why it all takes so long. |
