| 503481 | 2006-12-01 20:06:00 | Got a bizarre old PC yesterday. An AM37 motherboard, joyous thing....:yuck: It has built in LAN, however there is no option in the BIOS to enable/disable. There is an option under a separate access just after to boot to do things like enable or disable the boot rom, and change the protocol - PXE and something else. Anyway, Windows 98 was unaware the thing existed according to Device Manager. I tried to find a driver and gave up and put in a Realtek PCI NIC. Great until reboot at which point it lost it in device manager but still showed it under Networks. Weird. Much messing about and reinstalling and finally it accepted it again but the original onboard LAN decided to make its presence felt and pinched the Realtek driver as well. So there are now two instances of the same Realtek NIC in both Device Manager and Networks. They aren't the same (like when you get 2 drivers, one marked (2)) - one is the PCI and one is the onboard. Windows reports them both as working fine. I disabled the onboard one from within Windows as it does not work with a router plugged into it at all. The PCI NIC now connects to the net just fine. But thats the most bizarre MB I've seen in ages. |

| 503482 | 2006-12-01 20:13:00 | Sounds like a Packard-Bell PC i checked out, a while ago . It had onboard LAN/video, and sound . None of them worked . Got the right drivers for all 3 . Still didnt work . In the end the guy had to buy all 3 separately . . . |

The real drivers wouldn't work for anything in it, video, modem, sound, and the recovery partition was pretty screwed. I managed to find them in some unlikely corner of the hard drive, a neat folder with everything. I made sure to back that folder up. (Their kid had tried to save space by deleting everything in the Windows folder, except for what was 'in use' ...) | george12 (7) | ||
