720962 2008-11-18 20:42:00 Its mainly because of the costs involved. No-one wants to do anything other than the major cities because doing the rest means they don't get their costs back and with any corporation its all about money and not service. pctek (84)

With anyone it's about money over service. Not just corporations (although, agreed, they're usually the worst)

Would you sell computers where you couldn't recoup costs?

720964 2008-11-19 07:38:00 National's policy all along has been to do a private-public partnership - where local and overseas investors will stump up the bulk of the money involved, and the government will help out with up to $1.5billion of taxpayer dollars. So of course the total cost will be a lot more - the NZ Institute estimates a total of $4-5 billion to reach 75% of households.

There's an interesting report here which is well worth a read, and outlines a suggested way of providing a heavily regulated open-access fibre network. www.nzinstitute.org

While we don't *need* FTTH now, it will give us the ability to catch up with the rest of the world, and allow innovative businesses access to the rest of the world. Back in the day when the Post & Telegraph Office laid copper phone cables, they often laid twice the number that a street actually needed, to future proof. Now we're seeing all of that capacity being used up, and if it hadn't been put in back then, it would cost a lot to do now.

720965 2008-11-21 12:24:00 Sure, we all need FTTH, so we can watch High-Def movies while we talk on our IP phones as we game online and listen to streaming radio, all at once ....
