720992 2008-11-22 21:49:00 PJ - Read above ;)- I sent a PM that I didn't want to put details in a public forum

RAM = hell I'd give it away old SD (second hand stuff)

In your situation it would be a waste of time.

In hers not. It is not likely that she will change her comp to a newer model. So just beefing up the one she has got would be good. We have already been down this path & it is surprising how generous people are!!! PJ

720993 2008-11-22 21:58:00 I have a very good techi who has done several favours (we both love linux which makes us like blood brothers) but I honestly feel I have had too many favours just because I let him have my Linux Format Mag and disk each month.AND at present he is trying to resurrect
my partners DELL lappy. But that is a different story.

PJ The highlighted line - Excuse me -- but its not a waste of time, I have told many people ( customers) that if their PC is doing whats its meant to do for their needs then why upgrade to a newer one.

Its got nothing to do with power of the PC its the OS
She used all her flybuys to get a new Brother DCP-165c only to find it will not work on 98 but must have at least w2000. Windows 2000 will run quite happy on 256Mb RAM.

720996 2008-11-22 22:37:00 OK I will shut up. PJ No need to "shut up" -- it appears that the full post was not read - at the very start as quoted the lady got a printer from flybuys = Free = Good.

The problem is that the printer does not work on win98 which she has. The min requirements are win2000. I made a offer in a PM for a LEGIT copy of win2000 with the COA, at practically give away cost.

If someone wants to give away a Legit OS to this lady then fine, no skin off my nose so to speak.

The comment "In your situation it would be a waste of time" - thats a bit harsh considering the amount of stuff I give away to people all the time, and dont suggest getting new hardware just because its older - you have no idea what I give away.

Hooo Please dont be offended. What I meant was that as a working person you have time money & parts to do freebies.

But as a working Techie it would not be worth working on such old comps, even if parts are available.

No insult or slur was intended. Hell for all I know you have been working with metla.

Sorry. John

as a working person you have time money & parts to do freebies. Hmm Some parts yep no worries there - Money $$$ What that, We (meaning the better half) make enough to make ends meet ( most of the time).

But as a working Techie it would not be worth working on such old comps, even if parts are available. Not always - sometimes getting NEW parts can be a real Pain in the Butt, as they simply are no longer produced. But like I always say - if the PC does what the person wants it for, and apart from System problems works Ok no need to upgrade / replace it.

What I do see a fair amount of is Parents / Grandparents being hassled by the Kids / grand kids to get a new PC because its old and slower than "theirs" or because friends have better faster ones. -- Not right or an excuse to upgrade :groan:

Hell for all I know you have been working with metla  Never meet the man - prob a real good guy, BUT I do like how he calls things as they are - Or what every one else is thinking but to errrrrrrrr ???? to say ;)

BUT back to this thread - a Legit Win2000 will be posted tomorrow, so that should fix the problem.
