720952 2008-11-18 01:43:00 I kind of hope I am.

There are much better things to be spending money on.

To cabinets, fine. To homes, why would you want to do that?

I'm probably in the top 5 percentile of home internet users, and although fiber would be nice, I honestly can't see that much use for it past illegal downloading and porn. Maybe the Nats have backing from piratebay and redtube?

Spend it on health systems, or raising teachers pay. Or give some of the almost bankrupt arts organisations a break. If they die, then they're never going to come back again. NZ Opera, Royal Ballet, and NZSO could all do with a bit. I'm sure there are more besides.

720953 2008-11-18 02:52:00 Around the Motueka area, where I live, there are a lot of places like that, outside Riwaka, Brooklyn, west bank, all can't get broadband and most can't get any reasonable form of wireless and dial up is useless. Satellite is too expensive for most people and the performance isn't great.

Thats what having a decent fibre backbone SHOULD solve, more cabinets further out and subsequently better quality broadband for rural areas, and broadband to people who are outside the current coverage area.

I might be dreaming though. :(

I think you are.
They still need the equipment. You need to be within 5km of hardware for ADSL 1 and 2 KM for ADSL2+.
Can't see 1.5 billion coming anywhere near the amount you'd need to ensure people have some sort of broadband.
Theres loads of small places in NZ.

I thought it was $3bil?

720955 2008-11-18 05:45:00 Well, we have fibre to the house from the cabinet in a new home built July 2007 and NO ONE in our street can get broadband via the phone lines (or any other 'smart services' like faxability, call minder etc) as the signal apparently wont go past the cabinet to us once it leaves the copper wires from the exchange. We are in one of the fastest growing areas in Tauranga and the developers thought they would future proof the subdivision ... yeah right.

We have been told it will be 2011 till we get ADSL.

720956 2008-11-18 08:49:00 Does anyone know though how fast it will be if/when it is implemented? davidmmac (4619)
720957 2008-11-18 09:00:00 You can download the moon in three centimetres I heard.

And you'll be able to view three gigahertz in a megabyte, with pings of about seven petaflops.

I'd seriously treat it like vapourware. That way you'll be pleasantly surprised if you see anything from this.

720958 2008-11-18 09:30:00 I'm going to Hong Kong for a holiday's soon-what speeds would I experience approximately? Haven't been there in a while.

I hope its 3 megs a second at least

720959 2008-11-18 09:35:00 My international speeds are horrible. I get about 13mbits inside NZ, and as soon as I get to Australia the connection slows to about 1mbit or less

It is usually faster to get stuff from the US than from Australia. Someone once told me why that is, but time has stolen it from me.

Makes no sense really, basically anything outside of NZ, even just as far as AUS slows down considerably. I talked to my ISP and they just say "LOL ITS JUST CONGESTION. NEXT CALLER PLEASE"

They are future proofing, but telecom & ISPs are only just starting to get interested in that future. It is actually cheaper as well as better quality to run fibre than copper to new subdivisions, but nobody is interested in providing broadband over fibre.

It is mostly Telecom's fault since until recently, other ISPs couldn't hook into the telecom network to provide a service that the residents required.
