721134 2008-11-20 09:22:00 the songs should be in the my music folder(if xp) or music (if vista), it shouldn't take hours to copy all those over GameJunkie (72)
721135 2008-11-20 09:25:00 In the end we reset the whole thing.Wiped everything but there was nothing else we could do.My son now has to reload all 1700 songs back on to,and its taking hours. Can we copy the whole thing to another drive once he has finished,as a back up

Peter

It shouldn't take hours to upload. It sounds like it may have a problem, perhaps a defective hardrive. Perhaps it has been dropped, I would never buy a second hand one, as you don't know how it has been treated. If you hold down the centre button and the menu button at the same time to reset it, and then when you see the apple logo, hold down the centre button and the back button. This should take you into the bios, where you can check the hardrive status and do other tests on it. There is heaps of info on the internet about how to diagnosis problems.

could also be a faulty cable, as they aren't the best construction and can be a bit flaky.

721136 2008-11-20 19:54:00 Sounds similar to the 4th gen 40 gb here.

You can tell when its going to have probs, by listening to the sound the hdd makes. (it sounds like its straining to move / read the hdd, and it sounds repetitive)

I connected it once and nothing would recognise it either

In the end, I pulled it to bits, and removed the hdd (remember to put it on hold, if the Ipod has this), and gave it a flick / shake. That seemed to fix it for now.

Other than that, the only thing you could do, is either replace the hdd with another, or replace it with a smaller compact flashcard..

Yes, some Ipods can take memory cards, but they probably wont be as big as a hdd.

721137 2008-11-20 20:01:00 But the only problem is that you have to get the same model hdd to replace it as the Ipods firmware may not recognise a bigger drive. Silver_Blade (10144)
